You can't use it "all the time". The ECU won't let you use LC until a certain number of miles are driven. Why? Because its hard on the tranny, diff, etc. if you want to keep your car I would try it and forget it.

Yep have to have driven at least 6 or 7 miles and have warmed up oil... From a thread that I can't find now since its been a couple years... There is a required 'cool down' timer between LC runs... But guys at the drag strip use their LC for all their runs... I can't remember now how they did their burnouts before 'launching'

Was not aware that they removed it.
Launch control is only available with DCT. The 28i uses an 8-speed Sport Automatic.

It's not "launch control" but can brake torque the 8spd sport auto to 2000rpm in F30. Probably can do that with Z428i too

It's only on the 35i? Damn...well, that's probably a good thing. I'd probably end up on YouTube, trying to get out of my recently totaled car.

Only a week and you're already brake torque launching? When do we start neutral dropping

Kidding aside, I thought you could torque brake launch in all torque-converter automatics. Or does the F30 have a mode for it where the ECU limits you to 2,000RPM prior to the slip/launch.

One of my prior cars had 81 miles on the odometer when I took it to HPDE at Sears Point

F30 can spin the tires launching from 2000rpm so no need for anything more extreme. Too bad it runs out of power at higher speed though, like the E89.. It is so easy to get jaded and think 12lb/hp is insufficient

Pretty sure it isn't software limit, just the stall on the torque converter.

And this is the same guy who does not want to tune his N54 due to quality/warranty concerns.

Tuners revert to stock maps after 270F oil temp, so I would get the tune benefit for like...2 laps?

So not worth it to go through the potential hassles for such a limited benefit.

I'd rather keep the car stock, REALLY drive it, and do driver modification

Will be getting an F30 on Thursday as a loaner (not sure if it's the 328 or 335, but I'd imagine the former), so now I'm really looking forward to it

And this, guys, is why you never buy a former lease or loaner.

I know you would enjoy the improved throttle/engine response even if you kept the car at OEM power. You wife might not like it though. You can't get a sensitive and comfortable throttle response at the same time. But now she has that nice 335i!

Yea, I don't know about that.. I don't get the point of messing with OEM computer tune if it doesn't make any more power. That seems so incredibly point less! (it is as bad as LC that isn't useful at launching the car because of all the wheelspin it allows )

And we are back on topic...
Wheelspin or not, I read here that using LC is actually better for the DCT than brake launching:

Interesting read! Validates my own speculation that punching it from a stop has less wheel spin. It is a clutch slip launch versus a LC clutch dump where the wheel spin saves the clutches.

Two points 1) I think with drag radials he would break something else from driveline shock 2) he has SC so less torque than n54 with similar power.

Seems like 6MT the way to go for big power

LOL you guys can't get over that eh? "break in" is controversial but you guys know the varying points of view.

As for the warranty, that's one of the key reasons I like getting new BMW so often. Fresh motor, free maintenance and warranty!

I need to maximize my benefit otherwise if I'm going to be a granny I might as well buy used and save money

I find some of these comments about brake torqueing interesting due to the fact that the car keeps a record inside the ECU about the cars usage profile. For example BMW only warrant the use of launch control on the M series of cars to 5 during the whole warranty window. After this even if the car was still in warranty and anything failed then it was the buyers responsibility and very very expensive. Why does BMW do this? because the strain on components during a launch is massive, just because the car can do it does not mean it is good for the car!!!!
So the guys that insist on doing it make sure you don't own the car when it fails, even if in warranty!!!!!!! As with all things it is a person's choice!!!

Is this speculation or is that actually laid out in the owner's manual and warranty docs?

Pretty ridiculous to have a feature, with safe guards (such as can't use during break in) and then use it as a warranty restrictor
