It is extra exciting to drift in a Z4, or any real roadster for that matter, because of the seating position close to the rear tires. And with the roof down you can really hear and feel what is going on as you slide. Probably much more so than in an M5 for instance. The better weight distribution and power advantage, especially when tuned, might as well have made the Z4 more fun to drift than the rear-heavy Boxter. But this is all just speculation on my part. If you really want to go crazy, I would recommend the cheaper 1-series M coupe and equipping it with some narrower and cheaper non-performance tires that doesn't stick too well. It also has an LSD and a regular hand brake if I am not mistaken. (The Z4 has an E-brake only) Where I was born, sports cars are so expensive that most people have to do with much less power than in the US. Therefore I have learned that sometimes a rainy day, snow or simply narrower tires can be a short-cut to all the fun you ever wanted. And although now I live in a country where powerful cars are much cheaper, I still think it is true and a key to drifting heaven! And as said above, don't buy a car that is too expensive, because then it might only take a small change to your financial/job situation, and then you don't dare to turn the DSC off anymore. |

This cannot be overstated. Observant people will get into my car and wonder where the emergency brake handle is. I giggle and point to the small, electronic control. Confusion often ensues. If you want/need a hand brake for goofing off, this is NOT the car for you.
