Automatic transmission noise (sdrive 23i)

Hi all,

My sdrive 23i is 15.900 km old now.

Since it was 8.000km old, I am noticing an increasing amount of noise from the automatic transmission when the the car is warm.

It is always difficult to describe this kind of sounds...but I can say that is a whinning noise, something like the sound of a strongly reduced gear...like the noise that you hear from the gearbox in reverse gear...

It is more evident at low gear, like 1st or 2nd gear (that in fact are the most reduced gears...) moving from a standstill...on hi-gear it is unnoticeable, also because other noises prevail. (engine, wind, road, etc....)

Despite this increasing noise, the behavior of the transmission is absolutely correct.

Do you experience this noise also in your cars? What do you think about? Something like low oil level in the transmission (strange...because I did not notice any leaks under the car...)

Just for your info, other quite annoying "troubles" I experience from my zed is a creaking noise from the back passenger side of the hard-top when I go into fast, thigh turns or on rough roads.

Many thanks!

Cheers!!

Daniele

I have the transmission in a 3.0, but no noises after 50,000km. Get some Gummiplege for BMW and apply it to the rubber seals on the lower edge of the rear section of the top, and to the rubber seal between the front and rear sections. This should stop the creaks for a while.

I know of a few people that have had their differential replaced for a whining or whistling noise. It may not be your transmission.

My Sdrive23i with Automatic transmission from March 2011 with approx. 12.000 km makes only some ticking sounds coming from the gearbox in case of reverse parking. But I havenīt noticed a whining noise.

My 2009 23i had the decribed whining noise with A/C on. This noise can be eliminated with a vibration absorber (BMW part# 64509231714):
