2000 km is about the length of the break-in period, during which you're not supposed to drive it too hard. See the owner's manual for the procedure.

After 2000 or so km you're free to do what you want.

You will see difference in performance after 15.000 km.

BMW have always claimed that their engines have precisely machined tolerances when new. This is often referred to as a "Tight" motor.
Over time and with use a small amount of wear occurs on the piston rings and cylinder sleeves. This loosens the engine up and makes the pistons move in their sleeves with less friction.
This makes the engine rev more freely and respond a little bit faster to your throttle inputs.

There will be a gradual change over the first 15,000 km, not a step change when you get to 15,000km.

You will notice the difference if you drive a low milage new car back to back with a car with more than 10,000km on it.
You will not see any difference in it day to day.

MOst cars are like this. Often though it is talked about in regards to fuel consumption, as that is what most people care about (not on this website, obviously, but in the real world they do).
With less internal friction as the motor loosens up, the motor requires slightly less fuel to operate as well, giving slightly better milage after the car is "run in"

Its like your kids growing up. Each day they look the same, but compare them now to a photo from a year ago and it is very noticable.
