Is the antenna removable? And is there a cap I can buy to plug the hole?

I think the giant antenna is the only thing that really looks bad about the Z4. I know it can be swapped with a short stubby one, but the only function of that antenna is for AM and FM radio, right? I never use either and only use sat radio or my iPod so I was wondering if I could pull the antenna out completely and just cap the hole in some way.

Are there any caps designed for this that I could just have painted in the same color spec as the car?

When I turn it in at the end of the lease, I'm guessing I could just pop the cap off and reinstall the antenna.

Shouldn't affect satellite reception.

Yep, it just screws off. Although the stem is attached to the car, and can't be removed easily. It affects AM radio noticeably, and affects FM slightly but it's not noticeable (it's one of the 3 FM antennas).

This is mine:

This is where I got it:

That looks nice, but I'd love to pull out the entire thing and use a painted cap to plug the hole and make it flush. I guess it's just a question of how big the hole in the panel is and if it's a round hole or a square hole. If it's not too big and it's round, I could just buy a plastic cap from Lowes and have it painted to match the body.

Well then, I do believe you are the first person to attempt this

No worries. Still deciding on whether to order a 2014 Z4. If I do, I'll definitely attempt this. Just would be good to know how to remove the base of that antenna. Does it twist off, pull off, or some other way to do it? I guess the only other option would be that the entire panel has to be removed and it be unscrewed from the inside, but I tend to doubt it would be that hard.

just get a stubby antenna. BMW shares the same antenna system as Peugeot/Citroen and Fiat. I ordered my Peugeot part from an dealer in the UK. It fits seamlessly.

I think this is it:

Way too tall for my taste. I have zero need for FM and AM radio and it would look so much better to not have the antenna at all.

really? the thing is like 2.5" long and it looks pretty good. Not sure how it would look if you make it flush. Show us

The one in this link is less than an inch in height. Guess I should have been clearer in my original post that this was a link to an antenna:

The stubby though bigger is the better of the 2. It keeps the lines and is of the same material as the base of the antenna. The bullet type is glossy black and make s a sharp contrast between it and the base.

I agree. I have the 2.5 inch (I think) on my car. But he said he wanted a shorter one. To each his own.

Actually, I think he wants to find a way to completely remove the antenna base. No antenna at all according to what I have read.

You have to undo the aerial base from inside the wing to remove it, not so much of a problem, but I cannot see how you can fill in the hole with a cap without it looking unsightly,(it will also leak water into the boot) the only way to do this properly would be to get a body shop to fill it and spray the whole qtr??? But then you will have an issue when you come to sell, the next person will not be able to use the radio, will you tell them??? lol
I think you should go for the shortest stubby possible!!! and live with it!!! IMO
