Does DDC change steering response only if you have SERVOTRONIC?

Hi guys,

i definitely want to tune steering response with the DDC buttoms.

Is this also possible whithout servotronic, or do you need servotronc to change steering response with DDC? (because without adaptive suspension DDC doesn't change the damping)

Big thx!

I guess you are talking about the button to select the normal, sport or sport+ mode. If so the answer is yes. Each mode has a different level of power steering assistance. This is standard on all E89.

The servotronic does also influence the level of assistance, depending on the driving speed. But this is optional on the E89.

Yes I mean that button...

The problem is that servotronic is standard equipped on E89's in the U.S.
In belgium and also the netherlands it's on the option list.

I'm afraid if I don't take the servotronic that in that case the DDC-settings won't affect the level of power steering feedback...

SO i need someone without the servotronic option who can tell us if the different dynamic drive control settings also change directness of the steering wheel...
If not, i must have that servotronic option... hope I'm not to late!

What is standard equipment? I looked at the Nederland web site and saw the Servotronic (stuurbekrachtiging snelheidsafhankelijk) option, but wasn't able to see what was standard. The only thing that came close was the "Multifunctioneel stuurwiel" but I'm going to guess that's the multifunction steering wheel and not the standard rack-and-pinon assembly.

How far along is your order?

In the netherlands and belgium servotronic is an option at extra charge. Al the z's in the US come wit the servotronic feature as standard from the factory free of extra charge. Multifunction belongs in the netherlands to the standard equipment. My Z is three weeks on order now and I'm on my last days to change the configuration.

I apologize - maybe I didn't make myself clear.

To help answer your question I was asking you what the standard configuration is for a Z4 you would purchase in your country, not mine. I'm assuming that since servotronic is an option another less sophisticated unit is standard. Do you know what that is called.

Just electronic power steering without the servotronic function.

Although it's not absolutely necessary, you will need Servotronic to get the full benefit of the Sport/Sport+ modes modification to your vehicle in dynamic situations.

There are three technologies that directly govern your steering, standard Power Steering, Servotronic and Active Steering.

Power steering, the basic unit in your country, is not controlled dynamically like Servotronic or Active Steering. Steering pressure is constant regardless of the situation.

Servotronic, the option in your country, works with DSC, DTC and Sport Mode controls. Servotronic pressure changes depending on the situation.

Active Steering is a further enhancement that works with DSC, DTC and Sport Mode controls, and changes the steering angle dynamically depending on driving conditions. Active Steering makes your steering slower or quicker depending on the situation.

Hope this answers your question.

Hi,

To my experience the DDC does influence the standard powersteering, in sport/sport+ mode it becomes a lot heavier to steer than in normal mode.

Servotronic is an option I don't have on my car but as I understand it it's speed-dependant... the slower you drive the lighter the steering feels, e.g. one-finger parking might be a benifit...

As to active steering, I don't think this is available on the Z4.

maybe ICT should reconsider...

servotronic is speed sensitive steering, unrelated to ddc

Thx mate! That's what i wanted to know...
Yep active steering isn't available on the z series and servotronic is indeed speed-dependant but I thought I've read somewhere that servotronic is necessary to change the steering with the sport-button.

But if you say you don't have that option and you notice a difference in steering output... no need to bother the dealer again tomorrow and saves me 255 euros...

Denk dat jij ook op autoforom aktief bent? Wat is uw nick daar? Grts.

I agree with you guys about the Active Steering, however, I did get the info directly from the BMW Technology Guide on their website. On the other hand when I searched the e89 spec's for Active Steering I found no mention of it. The link they show in the screen capture below takes you directly to the 2009 e89 Z4 international website introduction page.

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicle...roduction.html

Apparently they have a glitch in this info. I'm sure that's the first and last time that will ever happen again.

Refeering to memphis2012 .Bad style!

Not worthy of a car enthusiast!
I have not got my car yet but before I start posting questions to members of this forum about different technical systems I will add someone to my blocklist! Even though the guy seems think to know everything there is to know about the Z4!

Everybody please "google" instead of keeping this forum alive!

It should be fun to own a Z4!
