Track info display with i drive???
Okay I don't play cd's that often so I still had the first cd that I loaded when I first took delivery of my car. I recently took that one out and loaded a new one and the track titles are not displayed on the nav. The first cd had all the track and cd information displayed. I have tried a number of cds and all it shows is track one, two, etc. The artist and the track titles won't show up. I don't recall setting anything up when I got the car. I just threw a cd in and it displayed all the info. I looked in the manual and I can't really find anything that addresses this.

They are all new cd's. In fact the first one that I loaded when I first got the car and displayed everything is actually older than the ones that I was loading in to try yesterday and today.

I do not think the info comes off the CD but comes from a connection to Gracenote... I think I remember reading that ion the manual but that would require a network connection..... Have to do more research....

it depends on the studio. you could probably load it to itunes and then burn it with the option to list names if you really wanted to. there's no option you can turn on or off.

I checked the Gracenote website and I think it was trying to say that you have to store the cd in order for the cd info to display. I don't recall doing that for the cd that I first loaded when I got the car. I like the ability to see the track names, but I don't want to necessarily store every cd that I play. If anyone figures this out, I would appreciate it.

gracenote is only for internet connected interfaces.... in order for the info to show up in your navi screen the CD has to have the info, hence my explanation... or did you skip my post completely?

That would also explain why you can see the track titles when you play older CDs. The database has to be updated frequently. Last edited by juhap; 02-10-2010 at 02:41 PM.. |

In the Z4, the Gracenote database is a stand-alone version and is not complete, as not every studio subscribes to it, its purpose is to provide music info and some DRM features, try saving some music to your hard drive, then back it up to a USB stick and try to use anywhere else that has a DRM capability, it will not play [according to the BMW/Gracenote info], you would also not be able to use the backup copy in another iDrive car. If you have the BMW Connected Drive, then you can get updates over the air if the media is "ripped" to the HD, otherwise the Dealer must update the database. there is write up here [ http://forum.autocd.info/download.php?id=3090 ] which covers some of this briefly.
If anyone has newer/better info PLEASE chime in.... |

I just read again the link I posted and you're correct. Any idea why there's this limitation? I can see the track titles in iTunes/Windows Media Player when I'm playing a CD (without ripping it). I'm assuming that if CDs don't contain any kind of unique identifer, one can be created from the tracks on that CD, and that identifer is then used for querying the Gracenote live database either over the internet (in iTunes/Win Media Player) or the database snapshot stored on the iDrive hard disk.
