no sound comes from mine. haven't pulled the covers off, but there do not appear to be tweeters inside.

I found this thread specifically looking to see if there was a plug and play option.

if there are tweeters and they simply arent working - sweet. I'll take it in to be fixed.
im going to check again, i was pretty sure before.

when i originally saw this thread i was about to order, i'll keep u posted

None in mine also. Will get a pair. Local dealer quoted $57 each not pair??? Does anyone know if the center speaker in the front and up high between the seats are plug and play also? I'm assuming these openings are for speakers. Thanks.

$57 each is what I saw as well.

Tischer BMW is likely cheaper than your local dealer:

may or may not be a big enough difference to make up for the shipping charges.

Probably my bad.. as I thought that speakers are always sold in pairs and hence the price was for the two... guess not .

Still a good prices at Tischer as it shows $47 for a local pickup. Wish my dealer had this price....

Anyone knows how to answer this question?

I'm getting the tweeters, and also would like to know if the central speaker is also p&p?

Thanks!

You never know but I doubt they're plug and play as they're intended to be wired to the hifi amp with more outputs. The tweeters are simply an extension to another speaker. The centre speakers etc are I believe channels in their own right.

I tried popping the center compartment on the dash to see if there is a loose plug that could be a speaker lead but came shy because I couldn't pop the front of the compartment off. Afraid I will break an odd clip. Felt around but couldn't feel any loose plugs.

Just installed my tweeters. Took just under 1-1/2 hours......being careful. The second door was much quicker....like 20 mins. Volume will not change but you definitely get the highs which makes the sound more crisp. A notch better than the original system. Worth the add.

Is the door panel removal similar to this E46 3 series video? Looks pretty easy after watching this:

It's a little different. The left door is slightly different from the right door as well. On the drivers door there are 4 torx screws (one inside the door release handle, two directly beneath the door pull handle and one at the far rear flip-out map compartment). The passenger door also have 4 torx screws (two inside the door pull handle in which you have to unsnap the cover first, one is inside the door release handle and the last is again at the rear map compartment).

Some said they had to cutout the foam filler inside the tweeter cover to fit the tweeter but it's not necessary. Mine fit right in without cutting anything out.

I have May 2010 build US Spec non-premium sound system and I get sound from the two door tweeters.

And if anyone needs them, I will sell you a pair of BMW OEM brand-new in box PN 65-12-9-220-750 Tweeters for $85 delivered (retail is $117,20 for the pair). Yes, I bought a pair while the car was still in winter storage when I read here that the non-premium sound did not get them and well, that isn't the case.

So if you want these, PM me and I'll get them out to you.

Interesting thread. I have a January 2010 build car with the non-premium stereo. Sound is OK by my ears, but then again I'm a geezer. I will have to check to see if my car has the tweeters when I return from a 3 week trip to Germany as I am living in about 30 minutes.

If only you were in the UK. . .

The e89, like most BMWs has 3 levels of audio: Base, Business and Professional.

On the e89, base has 6 speakers (no tweeters), Business 11, and Professional 14.

American market often gets the mid-level business as standard and the only upgrade is professional. Sometimes the top model (x30i or x35i) has the professional sound standard. What BMW NA choose varies from year to year and car to car.

Just to add my comments to the mix, I thought the UK base speakers were okay until I drop the roof and they weren't quite up to the job. Nowhere near as bad as a lot of people are making out, but certainly could be better.

I fitted a plug and play Amp and I'm about to fit the extra two tweeters, I've listed a separate post on the fitting of the amp for anyone who wants to give it a go. I can't remember the exact cost now, but it was something like £600 and not an overcomplicated install, the best bit is that it can always be taken out if you want.

The only problem I found since using the system is an electrical interference that the rear speakers seem to be picking up, I think it's because I got the gain turned up too much, haven't yet had a chance to go back in and change the settings - hopefully doing so later this week at the same time as the tweeter install
