I am at 302hp with my 30i.

I currently have Afe Drop in filter, Remus exhaust with secondary cats deleted. I had the car tuned by Frank Smith.

Fees great. Much more power, but super smooth throughout the whole power band. Frank Smith can do open source tuning. so He can do it remotely.

Would anyone say the N52 is more reliable than the N54?

I think so.

N52 being non turbo and not direction injection bypasses a lot of systems that have been brought up as possible issues for the N54, such as fuel injectors, high pressure fuel pump and wastegate rattle.

From my experience, N52 doesn't suffer from heat soak caused power reduction and limp mode issues when driven hard for extended periods.

Lastly, I have never heard of N52 cars lemoned for any reason but have heard of many N54 cars lemoned due to the drivetrain

I'm still conflicted as to what i should do, get N52 Z4 and track it (30 hard-ridden minutes per session), or spend extra money on finding ways to fix heat soaking issues on the N54 engine. Has anyone fixed this problem? I would probably start by wraping the headers. What exactly gets heat soaked on N54 engines? air intake temp too high? starter?

if I were to go down the path of making E89 35i/s handle the heat I would start with FMIC to get the intake air temps down (it heats up just from a long pull on the highway...), retrofit the 850W radiator fan and auxiliary radiator from the 335is or 1M (not sure it will fit) and wrap the downpipe and turbo.

I think it would be decent $$$ spent just to make the thing do 30 minutes of hot lapping with consistent power output

Also, an x factor I encounter is the DCT going to a very conservative state where the shifting speeds in sport+ / manual were extremely slow and in sport+/ S mode automatic upshifts would occur at 4k rpm. I did not have logging so I am not sure about the root cause. If it is DCT temperature I am not even sure there is an aftermarket part to fix the issue.

I think it is worth assessing how much you want an E89 if you are going to track it. in my opinion, E89 N52 has a weight to power issue, E89 N54 has a heat management issue.

On the advice of the folks who tuned my Z4, added 5mm front and 10mm rear spacers, this resulted in a major improvement in handling and a noticeably smoother ride. I have the 313 wheels and there was a bit of interference with the plastic wheel well liner, but was able to trim a bit off, and heat the outside edge to clear everything [took less than an hour]. The car drifts perfectly flat, and is very controllable at the limits of my Pirelli P Zero's. the front brakes were replaced with a set of E9x performance brakes [which BMW certified for the German T.U.V.], but left the rears alone. No big gain in braking, but a huge reduction in brake fade under sustained use [sustained use is 4 laps of the Ring at a very respectable pace].

I know a lot of folks don't care for spacers, but the bit of extra length to the wheel center line works very well to reduce shock travel and improve the ride and control. And yes, I was very surprise at the improvement and we are talking very small values here
I was looking for spacers for my list of things to install when i get my E89 but this configuration makes more sense. What kind of spacers are you using? They scare me for track use but, if you've confirmed them durable I would prefer to use spacers of the same steel grade quality as yours.

Just got my 30i back from a week being tuned at Schmickler Performance (http://www.schmickler-performance.de) run by some friends from the Ring. Marcus does not do "out-of-the-box" tuning, each setup requires 2 full days of dyno time. Suffice it to say that BMW has done a pretty good job of tuning the Z4's N52 (even given the compromised intake manifold to fit under the hood), Marcus was able to pull an additional 17 HP out of the motor as well as and additional 13.5 lbs/ft. Not big numbers, but the gain is consistent from 2,000 up to the new 7,100 redline and can be felt. What is amazing is that with the new tune, the motor has gotten unbelievably smooth (better than a sewing machine), revs much much quicker and even more impressive is the mileage gain:

Hockenheim to Ahrweiler @ 85 MPH for 100 miles and a 40 mile stretch @ 140MPH yielded 25 MPG.
The return trip back the same way, similar traffic and weather, after tuning yielded 33 MPG for the 85 MPH section, dropping to 28 MPG for the 140 MPH section, briefly hit its new top end of 162 MPH (per my supplemental TomTom nav unit (with speed cameras)).

So bottom line is that there are no big numbers to be pulled from a non-turbo gas engine in this car, but there is still room for some gains in performance and substantial gains in mileage to be had. All this coupled with the new H&R sway bars, and Marcus' tune on the suspension has improved every aspect of the car, and even reduced the understeer and rear end behavior of rough surfaces to a level way passed "acceptable".

NOTE - these speeds were legal where I hit them.
Chuck, your post sounds like you are acquainted with them quite well, can you be of any help? Posted an email (thru their website form) to them few days ago (in English, as my command of German shrinks into" zwei bier, bitte" only) and got no response. Do you happen to have a contact to someone (at Smickler´s) commanding English?

Well, frankly speaking your posting impressed me so much I asked them for conditions to tune my Z the same way....

And, consequently, N52 - once tuned - will it still meet EU exhaust emmision test?

Well, looks like they at Smickler´s went simply incommunicado - no response to emails and/or faxes.

Well, For all us N52 guys, ESS tuning is making a SuperCharger kit that is going to add about 100bhp and is going to be priced around $5k. Kit should be completed sometime in June 2014! Can't wait.

I just got an update from them, that the kit for the 3 series is complete, they are still doing some R&D for for the 30i Z4...

But I should be well over 400hp after the kit is install on low boost (7PSI)

Finally some love for the 30i

Coming winter probably gets somehow busy in my garage....

Somewhere out there, there are stiffer Sport Springs and swaybars by H&R bound to arrive soon and, today I made my mind out (read: learnt to live with the budget they propose), so I will go for a rather dramatic diff shortening .... 4.27 ->5.00 (hillclimb final gear by ///Motorsport)....
This would both limit the Vmax significantly (I do NOT care! ) and give me some extra 17% power on wheels....

EDIT: I forgot... just quite recently swapped a standard to ///Performace intake on my other car (330ix e91).... well, it breathes a lot better now... anyone knows bout anything similar to fit 30i Z4 e89 (EU specs N52B30K - 190kW) ?
