Just tested the car again. Started it in my underground lot and it already had a rough start - bad sign because it's not as cold vs outside and it's also the 1st time it occurred inside. The big CEL came on along w/ the small CEL. Drove the car outside and it was in limp mode so I couldn't push it. The 'new' humming sound (fan?) was present since the big CEL was on and it being in limp mode: I guess that these go hand-in-hand? The car even stalled when I was at a light and I had to restart it. There were faint knocking when I stopped at the lights. I wonder if bad fuel could be a possibility? Could these be symptoms of that too? Would getting those water-remover addictives work if this theory is possible?

I'm curious about the battery theory: shouldn't it not be an issue once the car starts since the alternator takes over? I have no idea, just wondering. As I was in limp mode, I couldn't get it up to reg operating temp (usually 1 notch below the middle) and only got it up to 1/4 from the bottom. Maybe I'll havta go to the dealer to get it checked out afterall. I know that I'm at 112K km/70K miles and 3.5 years, but this prb shouldn't come up so 'soon', should it? It is quite aggravating to say the least.
I'm really sorry you're having these troubles.

The battery voltage affects the computer's condition and all electrical components at start up. Trust me a battery can last longer but it's not unheard of for a one to loose its edge in 3.5 years. Do you have any places that can check it for you?

Not sure but you may need to clear the trouble codes to get out of limp mode.

Get a multitester and check the battery. You should be getting 14 volts

Another possibility, as others have said much earlier, is that the injectors truly are failing and need replacement. It is a known problem spot with the N54 engine after all....

You really need to get a reader or borrow one to look at the codes and assess the situation. Guessing while the car is in limp mode isn't something I would personally do....

On my e38 used to have a way to unlock the dash and run diagnostics like this. Is there not a way on these?

I believe this e90 "hidden menu" advice is applicable to the e89 as well

Apparently it can show voltage.

No personal experience

The Chinese have a saying...

..."if the problem can be solved with money, then it's not really a problem."

After successfully delaying for a few months, the fuel injectors finally conked when I recently went into limp mode several times, thereby forcing me to bite the bullet. Had to replace all 6 injectors/coil, sparkplugs and even the HPFP went faulty (luckily the HPFP was covered under some type of extended warranty, even though my original warranty ended).

Well, at least the car is running fine now. No more nervousness about it going into limp mode and stalling. Felt so emasculated w/o the car running 100% lol.

I just realized that the small CEL was probably due to the fuel injectors but the big CEL (1/2 engine light), which was a recent occurrence, was probably due to the dreaded HPFP, hence my car going into limp mode. Considering that I have a 2011, that's disconcerting...didn't they fix it already by then?

In hindsight, those addictives did their job for the injectors but obviously if the pump dies, there's nothing that can be done.

Also wondering for those that had their coils/injectors/HPFP replaced if they have gone trouble-free or any returning prbs? Or too soon to tell? Thx.

How does watered-down gas kill injectors? If they revert back to regular fuel won't it be alright?

Silly question: are the old fuel injectors worth anything or should I just trash them?

I'm not sure the new ones should be worth anything. Just had mine done last fall before I parked it for the winter. Bmw told me that an engine seal leaked and the oil made the injectors fail. Sounded like BS but they replaced them under the CPO warranty. They did however charge me 7 hours to replace the seal. I hope this isn't a sign of what's to come. I really like my Z, but if issues like this continue, I will move on to a non-bmw before my warranty is up next year

I'm come to the conclusion that all German cars have their share of random issues and it shouldn't be a surprise to have to pay up $$$ if they are out of warranty. Seems unavoidable with the cars so complex with a lot of new tech

OP, glad to hear the problem is resolved.

Thx. Just wondering if I can trash my *old* injectors or are they worth something?
