Really not impressed with build quality..
So as the rain has stopped, I thought I'd tackle that long standing tick/crack noise from the rear deck.
I thought I'd narrowed it down to the somewhat common roll hoop plastic rubbing. Sort of.. Look what greeted me once I'd got the roll hoop apart.. This over tightening and constant pressure from the roof mechanicals has snapped this brittle plastic in multiple places. Cheap plastic being held in place by insufficient means. There are two of these tiny tabs along the whole length of plastic behind the hoops and into the boot. I see this being very common as these cars age. This is the plastic strip along the boot edge that the two tabs hold in place (the trim tool edge is resting on it); These cars are really starting to get on my Christmas enhanced tits.. And as its trim its not covered under insured warranty. |

Wow that is hard to look at. my BMW dealer has been really hard to deal with whenever i mention the word "RATTLE". haven't been helping much. so unfortunate.
So your dealer refused to do anything about the cracks?

I'm waiting to hear from the dealer... I don't hold out much hope. The part however is around £40 ($60) so I may just fix it myself provided I can figure out how to get the thing off...

When I took my covers off I dont remember even seeing that bit. I have a 2010 model so that maybe something new. I found the rear crack noise is coming from the roof shield in the boot....when it is down it makes the noise but when it is up (to make more room in the boot) it seems to go away...

What kind of lame warranties do you guys have overseas? Broken plastic trim that clearly broke under normal use isn't covered under warranty? You're getting shafted.

Hmmm I might take a look at mine as well. You just popped off the cover with a trim removal tool?

When I upgraded my roll bar trim to CF I took some pics and I can see the same tab on mine is not cracked. Sorry for the angst you're having, but you're just an afternoon project away from resolving that noise. Good Find.

My car is over 3 years old, in the UK, BMW supply a manufacturer warranty for 3 years, which covers everything. After that you pay per year for what is known as an insured warranty, but this has exclusions, and one of them is trim!

I took my Z4 to complain about the rattle sound of plastic on plastic. After two attempts, they found the problem in "clips" and replaced them. They gave me the ones causing the problem, and they were broken in half (I think I threw them away, however). Replacing the "clips" fixed the rattle, which had been driving me crazy.
