how do the paddles work with this steering wheel

I'm used to normal flat paddle shifters in the 2 different 335's I've had.. usually the right hand shifts up and the left is down a gear. Looking at a 2011 z4 I see these:



How do the paddle shifters work when they look like the above wheel?

Each side allows you to both push AND pull -- only difference (apart from the shape)

both sides do the same thing. Push to downshift and pull to upshift.
This was changed in 2012 to the more typical left down and right up.
I have a 2011 with the old paddles while my MB has the "newer" configuration. Screws me up when I go from one car to the other!
