The documentation says it's not possible. You have to stop the car, but I've also read that if you start opening the roof and then take off you might be able to open do it that way while it's still working.

I think it's crazy because that trunk lid is like a huge sail and more than likely will be damaged.

It's not, unless you alter the car with a new control module, which is what your video is advertising.

+1 LOL - I finally looked at the vid after my post.

Some of the functions of these modules are pretty cool, but I find no use for being able to drive this particular model while lowering or raising the hardtop. I think BMW got it right in this case to prevent people from tearing their trunk lid off while driving at any speed greater than a crawl.

To start the roof operation you need to be stationary, but if you keep your finger on the button and then drive away the roof continues to either open or close. I'm not sure if the operation is interrupted when you reach a certain speed though.

thanks for the input. my car should be arriving in a month's time now ! really eager to drive this beauty, however my concern was not to drive at great speeds with the mechanism working ! that would be nonsense. But rather, I can imagine myself driving on the highway in Belgium with the top down enjoying the sun, and all of a sudden it starts raining ! If at least the mechanism works at slow speeds around 40km/h that would help close the roof without actually stopping and getting wet in the meantime. Hope you get my point ...

As long as you're doing at least 80 kmh you won't get wet. I've tried and tested this in my E85, luckily it had stopped raining by the time I had to slow down.

I can't imagine it's worth even trying to tear off my roof while moving!

I drove my Z3 years ago at 75mph in hard rain and stayed quite dry. Fortunately, I was on a US Interstate highway and kept moving - if I'd needed to stop, I would have been soaked!
