Exactly. There is a consideration to be made about how much your life is worth.
You can divide your life in time, and on each period in your life, that time has a different value. In hindsight, your childhood, youth and young adulthood are by far the most valuable ones (probably in that order).
When you're young, you want to make money because you think you can do a lot of things with that that will make you happy. When you're older, you realise it doesnt work that way. The older you get, the less materialistic you get, and realise its about spending time instead of spending money.
So live your young life to the fullest. Dont try to make more money than you need to.

This. I was recently laid off and I'm NOT looking for another job. I took this as a sign that it was time to finally just do my own thing full time. Luckily unlike most of OT I'm pretty cheap. I don't care for nor own fancy clothes, I stick to little hole in the wall places where 2 people can eat for $30 and refuse to go to those frufru places with dress codes and shit. I have no pricey hobbies and would rather watch a movie at home than go to a movie theater.

You need to be making around $350k for it to approach worth it. You'd have the same quality of life making around $150k in Dallas, Houston, or even Chicago.

I hope that each decade continues to get better and better until my health becomes an issue in my early 70s (hopefully I am being conservative)

Each decade looks to be something new and exciting
30s - stable career, house, start a family, build net worth, travel part time
40s - stable career, house, spend time with family, established net worth, travel part time
50s - start transitioning into retirement, kid(s) going to college, purchase midlife crisis German car with European delivery, travel more frequently
60s - retirement, travel frequently, still driving midlife crisis german car

It could be worse. There are tons of people who work those hours and probably dont make anywhere near what you do.

Its all about putting in your time and keeping an eye out for opportunities to progress in your career to a point where you can make the same amount, or more, and work less hours.

When I first graduated (Construction Management Degree), I was working 15+ hrs a day (7 days a week in most cases) and Im sure I wasnt making your level of salary. Did several years of that before I was able to take advantage of some higher level position openings and a company switch, and now I am working 40-50hrs/week most weeks, all while making more than before.

Thats' a lot of careful planning, that may never turn out to be true... live everyday as if it's your lost... this is a key mistake that I have seen hurting many people that didn't follow this adage

I work (to make money) about 8 hours per day, then at day time I run around with my kids and usually I still have the energy to go help my friends on their construction sites. All in all I'm pretty much busy 20 hours per day, every day of the week and I love this!

I'm a freak and since I work for myself, it makes it easier to take time off and to enjoy the kids and the family time too. I can always do my paperwork at night when others sleep, and I can trade while walking with the dogs.

Careful planning? The only planning necessary is trying to find a way to afford said german car for european delivery.

I have no complaints about my life right now. Give me a million cash today and I would work the same job, live in the same house, etc. Only change would be that I would purchase the mid life crisis car earlier.


Talked to my wife about something similar. I told her about a car I saw for sale. She asked if I wanted it because she thinks I should get a new car.

I told her no because that car is like a $3 hamburger. I either want the $1 hamburger (current car) or the $5 hamburger. If I die not eating the $5 burger, I was still happy with my $1 burger knowing that I was getting closer to the $5. If I was to purchase the $3, I would think that I should have just gotten the $5 burger or the $1 because the $3 wasn't quite right factoring in everything.

just going off of what family members and friends have made working wall street at a young age, im sure he could have bought something else, but it sounds like he works all day and rides a train to work. Why waste tons of money on a car you never drive?

Shit, Ive got a cousin working for a big firm in NYC that makes way more than enough for an exotic but he doesnt even own a car. Just uses the subway/buses/uber/taxis to get around and doesnt have to deal with the hassles of owning a car in a city like that.

Not relevant. You can make $1m per year but if you're too busy and/or miserable to spend it, then it is not worth keeping that job. That's why it's advisable to work hard and get out or balance things out and make less.
