Funny you should say this ... My daughter when she saw this the first time said "Dad your stereo should go on automatically and blare out the 5th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven"

How sweet that would be ---> Everyone would Smile

Installs under a flap in the trunk. The newest version has a plug-and-play harness...no vampire taps any more. The hardest parts are getting the trim clips off & trying to get the unit to fit well amongst all the other wiring under the hatch IMHO.

Completely agree with atebit. The only two issues I have when I put the unit in is to get the rubber clips off without breaking them and to force the plug-n-play harness into the tight space. But with practice, you'll get it.

Ordered mine today and should have it by Saturday. Looking forward to the added functionality

I'll leave the USB cable accessable, but wanted to know if having it there is a real risk to the warranty. I have modified Toyotas under warranty and never had an issue. I uderstand if my modification could have caused the damage, then it's not covered.

Is that the concern? that eventually we will have a problem with the top and they will have recorded we installed this device? or is it just general to the warranty

Leaving the USB cable accessible is definitely the right thing to do. However, you can disable the module for routine trips to the service center via the turn signal stalk.

Though it's dire straits, there is an emergency method in the z4 owners manual to manually raise the roof. Not a fun procedure but at least you should be able to remove the module in the midst of (most) failures to close. before taking it in. The plug & play harness makes it that much less detectable.

Just installed this, took about 25 minutes and works great. The hardest thing about this is understanding the clips that you remove are two piece. Best to stick a regular screwdriver under the top lip and work it out. I left the USB cable accessable

Is there?

For curiosity's sake, I just reviewed the manual & couldn't find it... can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Well, it looks like you guys are right. I could've sworn I read about it in the manual after getting the car, but I think what I must've (mis)read was this:

Emergency Actuation of the Retractable Hardtop
An emergency actuation facility for releasing the retractable hardtop by the customer is not possible. Emergency actuation is, however, possible in the service workshop. The emergency actuation procedure is described in detail in the repair instructions.

from here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/92249489/S...mplete-Vehicle

Every other convertible I've owned had an emergency procedure, though it usually required two people.

Mea culpa.

Thanks & no worries...

I just thought that you had access to some super double-dog secret information.

Like you, I'm a little surprised that there is no emergency procedure for closing the roof. On the other hand, with all the hydraulics and electric switches/locks, I suppose it's understandable.

I finally installed my SmartTop from the February Group Buy (just got my car on Tuesday) and I absolutely love it. I don't even know which feature I like the most - they are all great. Being able to just press a button to drop the top while walking towards your car is great - single press without holding the interior buttons is SO useful - opening/closing top while moving is obviously great for those sudden rain showers we've been getting lately here in GA. Heck, even the auto close of exterior mirrors when locking the car is very useful.

Installation was quite simple. I left the USB cable connected and stored the cable inside the empty space in the first piece of plastic that you remove during installation. It is completely hidden, and all you need to do to access it is pull off that plastic piece (held on with 3 spring clips). I've wrapped the end of the USB cable in a plastic bag w/ rubber band to prevent shorts.

Just installed mine... I had one on our 2011 E88 and it worked flawlessly... This is the first mod to my 2013 E89... a must for convenience sake.... and so much easier to install on my Z than my 1er... about a 10 minute job without the need of tools... well maybe a large flat head screwdriver to pry open the black plastic push on clips. I left the USB cable behind the little door in the interior trim, if ever I need to reconfigure/update the little guy in the future.

This really should be the way the top actuation buttons SHOULD operate from the factory!!

Hey Buckaroo ...

So, my understanding is that the 2013 models already support opening/closing the top while moving -- perhaps not up to 25mph anymore, but still while moving. That was one of the main reasons people installed the SmartTop, but it sounds like the other features were enough to get you to install it as well -- i.e. the one button operation from the console, and the ability to operate it while away from the car.

I've had mine installed on my 2011 model for quite a while now and find it absolutely invaluable and can't imagine the car without it. And I agree that this is the way the car should be delivered out of the factory to begin with.
