Interesting, 2012 M4 coupe replacing M3 coupe
BMW traditionally launches its M3 as a coupe and follows later with the sedan. Not next year, however, when the new flyer surfaces. Word in Europe is that the M3 badge will appear only on the sedan.
The reason is, apparently, that BMW wants something on which to pin a 4-Series badge. So what has been the two-door M3 will now become the M4. BMW is said to be spinning the two-door version of the 3-Series off into a 4-Series - more closely mirroring the 5-Series sedan and its coupe/convertible counterpart, the 6-Series.

This ^^^ just rumours at this point in time ... the 2012 will still be the V8 like it was up to now offering a MT or M-DCT for the e9x M3.
rumours have it that the ///M Division is working on a brand new engine for the ///M3 ... I venture to guess it will be along the lines what is now available in the sDrive Z4 35i or 35is. i.e. a inline 6 with twin turbo perhaps a few more HP to make it different. All this for 2013 of course. I hope the ///M Division will also make available a more powerful V8 as an option for customers that like to take the M3 to the track EDIT - REMOVED "V" FROM INLINE 6 THANKS wiles335i FOR SPOTTING MY TYPO

^^^ Agreed. The original intent of the thread was slightly relative since "we" are the only ones in the lineup with 4 in our name. Sorry.
