iPod and uploading to nav hard drive

If you were not to buy the iPod USB adapter option would the car still have a USB port?

The reason I ask is because I am thinking of getting the Nav system which will allow you to store music into the cars hard drive. I would not use my iPod except for the first time I up load the music into the HD. So if the USB is present, would I need this adapter to upload the music?

Also does anyone know if you can upload the music off the cars CD player into the HD? If you can, can you upload the songs in a mp3 format (that way you can place alot more songs as a data mp3 per CD) or does the CD need to be in audio format?

Per the manual, You can only use CD/DVD slot in the dash or the USB connector in the glovebox. I don't know if that's standard without the iPod/USB connection, but its included in the U.S. premium sound option.

Compatable devices include CDs, CD or DVD based MP3 collections, USB sticks, and MP3 players with USB interfaces.

The iPod/iPhone and USB hard drives are listed as incompatible.

The "iPod and USB adapter" are listed together as a $400 USD option and are can be purchased separately from the Nav system. I think the term adapter is a misnomer as the literature refers to the "adapter" as the place you plug in your USB stick, rather than some kind of separate cable adapter. More than likely they are referring to the USB stick slot and a module that makes the radio capable of reading the USB stick.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, thats what I was really wondering. If the car has a USB slot as standard, or the slot only comes with that package. Can anyone confirm this?

If you get the nav system, you WILL have a USB slot. I have the Nav and the iPod/USB and premium audio, and I have 2 slots. One in the glove box which is used to load music and map routes onto the hard drive, and one in the arm rest which is the iPod interface, and can pull music from a USB drive.

I've seen the option to upload to the HD whenever I play a CD. Just so you know, these aren't data CD's full with .mp3's, just regular red book audio burned CD-R's that can be played on any CD player. Not too sure exactly what format and/or bitrate it's recorded in (kind of doubt it's lossless), nor do I know how big the HD is...

One thing that kind of makes me chuckle is the single CD player's ability to recognize what CD is in the player. I record all my music to CD-R whether it's full mixes or new tracks that I'm working on and it always ID's the CD wrong. Doesn't do this with any of the CD's in the glove compartment's changer, just the single slot.

It does correctly identify burned CD-R's that were directly copied from regular CD's. I did find that surprising.

That would cover my collection, but with it all already in my 16GB iPod, why bother?

It's kinda nice when you have multiple ipods & devices. Easy to combine what you want and keep it on the iDrive. Plus, it's easy then to remove podcasts, etc, that you don't want others thumbing through if you load it on the drive.
