ok to mix E85?

im looking into a low ~20% e85 mix to simulate higher oct for tune, from what ive read there is some debate about whether ethanol is detrimental to modern fuel systems, what do you guys think? i am not sure if it is worth the risk

It's fine. Just don't mix more than a few gallons (e40 max) on the stock low pressure fuel pump. I currently run 100% e85 with a fuel it stage 2 pump and secondary inline pump feeding a port injection rail. I made 600whp on that setup and drive it daily like that.

Also, there was a BMW engineer that came out a while back and said the N54 can handle either e85 or standard gasoline just fine. The issue is the low pressure fuel pump can't keep up with the high pressure pump so stock, you can only run a few gallons. Once that's upgraded though, you can go full e85

Not entirely true. I mixed E85 and 93 for 2 years and never had an issue. I did not have easy access to E85 so I always used an E60 mix on the stock LPFP and stock HPFP and never had an issue with either being able to keep up. This is no issue with this strategy with the stock turbos, but you will never be able to do this using hybrids.

I am only on pump fuel now, but with a 7 liter.

yeah you're right. Apparently out LPFP is a little more robust than the standard 335/135 version. Just make sure you have a tune that will support the extra octane.

thanks for the info guys, i think i will give it a try. i plan to run mhd 95oct map with 20% e85 and 80% 91oct, not sure if that is too big a stretch.

that wont be enough octane since you are mixing with 91.... the z4 fuel pumps can handle it... I am running a e60 tune right now w/ no issues on stock pumps

e60, blending e85 w/ Shell 93, on stock fuel w/o issue. Just have the ECA which is very helpful in keeping the blend correct.
