How to replace rusted lug nuts

As shown in the picture almost all lug nuts are rusted and looks ugly. They are not covered under warranty. Can I replace them myself or should I take for service ? I don't have any tools and don't mind purchasing the right tools for the job.

A 1/2" drive breaker bar with the correct 1/2" impact socket for the lug nuts (I don't recall the exact measurement - someone chime in if they know off the top of their head) and you are good to go. You can find them at your local Autozone, Pepboys, etc. Shouldn't run you more than $20 for the breaker bar + socket, then you just have to purchase the replacement lugs. Screw out, screw in. 15 minute job for all 4 wheels.

Something like this:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...er=391361_0_0_

and this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/13-piec...set-67903.html
You don't have to buy the set, just buy the correct size if you want ($4-5 for quality ones)

Oh and while you are at it, a torque wrench is a good thing to have.

Helps tightening the lug nuts to correct spec, something BMW service NEVER does for me, I'll have you. Always overtorqued.

Why replace them. They were once painted, just bust the rust off and put new black on them.

17mm

I highly recommend a high quality socket for this, like a snap-on impact socket. The last thing you need is a stripped lug nut from the socket deforming

That's why you should always use a 6 pt socket, which holds true for all fasteners.

Remember our cars are mostly metric if not all. Those lug nuts are 17mm

By 1/2" he means the wrench size, not the socket

What are the torque specs for the lug nuts ? I don't see these specs in the manual.

I torque them to 120Nm (which is about 88.5ft/lb)

Those are wheel bolts, not lug nuts.

Correct torque for our cars is 90 ft-lb or 120Nm.

Thanks everybody ! I will be doing this over the weekend. Do I need a jack ? If yes, can somebody recommend one for Z4.

If you're going to buy a jack, get a low profile floor jack. That way you'll be able to use it if you ever want to get under the car. A regular height jack will not be able to slide under the front bumper cover due to the low clearance.

You don't need a jack just to replace the wheel bolts, since you can just remove and replace one at a time.

There's absolutely no need to slide a jack under the front bumper cover, and no point in even trying. The jack pads are at the sides, just behind the front wheel wells and just in front of the rear wheel wells. Those are really the only points at which you should be lifting the car.

And, yes, if you do get a jack you'll need a low-profile jack. The lightweight aluminum ones sold as "racing" jacks are fairly inexpensive and work just fine.
