SOLD! (transfer completed)….

I cannot believe how quickly the process took to transfer this lease. Now granted, this was a particularly unbelievable deal, but still, less than 1 week. I received the confirmation from BMWFS yesterday and the new owner is picking her up tomorrow. I must admit, I’m a bit sad to let her go. For the price I was paying and the overall package, I can reluctantly say I was foolish to transfer the lease. I should have just kept it until next July and then decide what to get next. If the transfer would have taken weeks to generate interest, I probably would have just taken the Thread down (it was just a “feeler” after all!). But I have issues, and my Bimmer ADHD obviously gets the better of me. Although I only had the Z435is for 1 year, I previously had a Z435i (E89) for 2 years (wow, God forbid), and I guess it was time for a change.

So….now what? I “think” I have narrowed down my potential next BMW, but many might consider them polar opposites: 2013 M3 (DCT) or 2013 135is (DCT). I cannot stand those Threads that ask total strangers “What color should I get” or “Which car would you choose,” so I apologize in advance, but I need input on thinking this through.

I’m 70% certain I should go with the 135is, but that 30% keeps gnawing at the pit of my stomach. The other day I test drove my Service Advisor’s personal 2012 M3 (DCT). The M is a phenomenal machine; however, I left the drive void of that feeling: “I gotta have this!” Now perhaps that was due to not pushing it hard given my SA was with me, but there are several factors I’m hesitant about with the potential of getting the M: Price of admission, gas mileage, and tire wear. I guess I’m not the typical M customer as those factors are probably not on the radar for this demographic. Ironically, the M was more comfortable than my Z, but in order to hear the exhaust and get that neck-snapping performance, you need to drive the M hard, which again is at the expense of mpg and tire wear. I have always longed for an M3, what BMW enthusiast hasn’t? But perhaps it just is not the right time. But every time I draw that conclusion, that 30% devil keeps coming back…

Now obviously I cannot test drive the 135is as they only started production in July. But I drove the 135i significantly during my BMW Performance School a few years ago and I loved it. It is a tight and fast little rocket. I’m sure the 135is will be that much better with the Performance Power Kit and Performance Exhaust standard. The negative for the 1er are the exterior looks at certain angles (IMHO). Of course nothing compares to our gorgeous E89s, but that’s a tough order for most cars currently. The positives for the 1er is that it is significantly cheaper, I would only lease for 2 years (whereas the M would be 3—again my ADHD voices would be getting louder in my head by then), I have no doubts that it will perform and handle extremely well, and my current winter set-up would fit.

So guys/gals, what are your thoughts? I don’t plan on posting over on the 1er or M3 subforums, as I know those folks would be biased toward their current rides. It would be especially insightful to hear from some of you whom may have had a 1er or M3 previously or currently (I PM’d some of you and thanks for your feedback).

It’s been a pleasure being an E89 member and participating on this subforum.

I would take a M3 over a 135is without a doubt

the S65 is far superior to the N54 and N55 engines.

This is coming from someone who has owned 2 e89 Z4s and an e93 335i in the past 3 years.

I was originally planning to get the 135 with DCT and M sport package but ended up with the Z4 35i instead.

I think the 135 is more practical, performs equally well and as you pointed out is cheaper. If I wasn't able to score great pricing on the Z4 I would have gotten the 135 for sure.

Hard to go wrong with the M3, its a great car. I briefly looked at it and it was a LOT more expensive to lease than the Z4 or 135 due to the lower residual and less discount on the price. I guess you have to personally assess how much the cost vs. extra performance is worth to you (and whether you could achieve similar performance by modifying the 135is slightly)

I came from a heavily modified 335, and my previous z4 35i was modded as well.
The N54 (nor n55) can compare to the S65.

As a DD car, the N54 is better than the S65. But as a performance engine, the S65 wins hands down.

My payments between my e93 m3 and z4 aren't even $200 apart, so it wasn't too difficult of a decision.

I don't think a 135 performs as well as a z4 in regards to handling, but I can't comment too strongly on this as I have only driven a 135 for about 1k miles

I don't disagree. These days I think the monthly lease cost is about $300 apart for 135 and M3.

OP seems to like switching it up often, so 2 yrs in a 135 would be fun and put him right on target to get the F30 M3 right when it comes out!

True

The longest I've owned a car for is 20 months, so we'll see how I hold up too lol.

I love taking over leases and transferring leases.
