The GP is a beast. The local dealer here had one. Not for sale though.

Still a much smaller, lighter, more involving car and keeps the rwd aspect with the added bonus of a real LSD. Of course this all presumes you don't need a back seat.
There were three cars in my past that I will always remember with much fondness.
A 1991 Honda CRX, a 2006 NC Miata and a 2014 Abarth 500.
See the pattern here?
My 135i is by far the most powerful car I have ever owned. It feels special in its own way, and I most definitely do like it.
But, I have yet to own a car that I kept for more than 3 years... most of them stayed in my garage for no more than 12 months.
I know I will eventually find one that will be there for much longer.
It may be the 1er... but I need to do something to make it feel more "urgent" and "eager".
I think suspension work may be in its future...

It is hard to put into words, but I love how my 135i gives you the shove-in-the seat-back at WOT. It's remarkable, for an unassuming looking car to do this.
But I think I love it even more when a car feels like it's trying to run away from under you... like you are always downhill, you know. If I can only somehow get that feeling in my 1er, it would be perfect.

Or I could just try the JCW.... somehow I managed not to own a Mini as of yet, lol

Funny, had a 1989 CRX Si, a 1999 NB Miata and a 2008 135i. Interesting similarities.

This afternoon I went to drive that JCW again... this time by myself.
So I had solid back-to-back comparison between it and my 135i.
Damn.
I love the simplicity and raw power of my 1-er.
But the chassis setup combined with eager lightness of the Mini are so awesome. Played with suspension/engine mode combinations and left very impressed, again.
Then I drove my car back home and I kept thinking how this inline six is plain magnificent.
So this is what I think in the end: with some smart suspension upgrades the handling of my car can be vastly improved. It won't be a match, but I think it can get close.
At the same time I really don't think any money can make the 4-banger in the JCW feel quite like the N55.

Also, the more I looked at the Mini interior, the less I liked all the glitz and glamour. My 1er is a lot easier on the eyes and feels way more solid and refined.
And since the weather is surprisingly nice today, I got to drive both cars with open windows and as much as I liked the JCW pop-pop-crackle, my PPK/PE oh-so-guttural-sounding combo wins hands down. No doubt about that.

I will think about it some more, but don't think I can let go of her just yet...

I too owned 3 Minis....two S models and one JCW. That car was impressive. You could here the growl of that little engine from far away. I whipped plenty of faster cars with it. But! Minis are costly out of warranty. Also, My cracked windshield was $1000 to replace.

Edited for accuracy.

That wasn’t my reference to the warranty. Just a caveat of how expensive the Mini is.

btw i had a 135i too. 2008 "year 1 of the 1" edition. it's a pretty good comparison - - two short wheelbase turbo cars. the JCW GP is more of a go-kart because of the lighter weight, but doesn't have that BMW feel at all. the 135i was a BMW all the way - smooth I6, RWD, etc

initial ownership on my 135i sucked because of the HPFP issues but i'm assuming that's all sorted on your car.

I've heard that, but I haven't experienced it - no out-of-pocket expenses except maintenance in my 5 years of owning a JCW.

Owning a used BMW is like being married to an ex-glamour model.
She still looks good, dresses sexy and all your middle-aged loser buddies are full of envy.
But her farts smell just like any other girl and she leaves a bloody mess sometimes after she's done in the kitchen.
Still, she's hot and sex is great, so, in other words, since marriage is a never ending compromise and as long as nobody gets hurt, it's all good. I will keep her around for now.

However, the very moment bitch cheats on me (like she blows a waterpump or her HPFP goes buh-bye) I will instantly trade her in for a much younger funner lighthearted amateur who posts nudies on Instagram. Like that JCW.
I may be old but I am totally hip like that.

For now she's been completely faithful and as a token of my appreciation (while I anticipate the inevitable) she's getting her fluids changed one by one, so she lasts a wee bit longer before starting to fall apart on me.

Are the new F something series Mini headlights can be retro fitted onto the R56's?

Eh, what you'll do is realize you have to fix that to sell it, then you'll realize since it's been fixed it'll be OK, and then you'll keep it.

You really just have to decide that it's time for a new car, and go for it. Independent of having or not having an issue.
