Winter or All Season Tires ... what you think?

Hi Fellows,

So I picked up this fake 18x8 (replica) M/// brand new wheel set (drove to Toronto to pick it up), saved some of the original purchase price, taxes duty and shipping of course.

The question is should I put Winter or All Season Tires on them since we do not have the kind of snow here in Southwestern Ontario (like we had in Alberta) I am thinking a good set of all seasons.

What you all think of that idea or should I go for winter tires?

What winter tire make (if any) are you using?

I will post pictures once the tires/wheels are mounted on my Z in October (The wheel looks like my Avatar).

(I plan to drive my Z only when roads are clear, chances of the tires ever seeing snow is very remote. I do have another car for the snow that one has AWD).

Winter - even if there is no snow. All-season tires are a compromise and will not help much on very cold or icy days.

Blizzak LM-25's FTW.

It's not just the snow, it's the cold that affects the tires ability to grip. I would do the dedicated snow tire if you are going to change out your summer performance wheel/tire setup anyway.

+1 on the Blizzaks, I have these on my 3 series touring for the winter.

For this first winter (at least) my Z is going to stay cozied up in the garage.

If you have to drive on snow at all go with a winter tire. If it's just cold temps an all-season will be good. All-season tires are a comprimise but only at the extreme limits of handling. On public roads it is a non-issue. For track days A/S tires would suck.

Go to tirerack.com and check out the videos they have on winter vs all seasons. It is a HUGE difference even if there's no snow. it might save your ass on a black ice day or slick icy rain.

+1 Huge difference in performance/safety, all season tires are good in all seasons, but really good in none...

I had a pair of blizzaks on my 19" rims on the M3 (don't ask why) and they were pretty good.

As for snows vs all seasons......snows every time. I used to swap my all seasons for snows on my Volvo XC70's every winter.

I did this last year too with my then 2008 Z4 30is, inflated the tires 10% over the rated pressure setting based up on my BMW service manger's recommendation

Thanks for your post!

Don't forget to buy the "BMW Approved" sandbags for the trunk. You'll need at least 2 but 3 would be better.

Good you're going w/ the snows. I have no idea but I assume that the all-seasons are priced similarly to snows? If that's the case, since you're switching from your summers, might as well get the best for the winter.

This.

I have Blizzaks on OEM 17" 276. Handled great last winter. They are performance winter tires so they handle better than typical winters.

You seem to be ignoring the option of...

. . . . . .. . ... . . . . . . ..moving somewhere where the sun shines all year!

As they say in the ads: "Queensland - Beautiful one day, perfect the next"

Mind you, dont believe the advertising, I had to put the roof up this morning when it started to rain....

That makes twice now since June.
Horrible weather.

My dear Friend, I've been there done that ... you know what they say ... nice to visit always nice to go home again. I like our four seasons, a 3 month visit to your lovely country was nice (saw it coast to coast) then it was nice to get back home again.

As for your top ... at least you won't wear it out like going up and down all the time

They don't call Florida "The Sunshine State" for nothin'

But I hear ya - year-round warm temps are the best for a car like the Z; everyday I see at least 2 or 3 Z's on the road down here
