Minor Accident with repair quote

My poor little Z4!
An elderly gentleman backed his car into my back driver side bumper. He did not want to go through insurance and has agreed to pay for the damages himself.
Bob Smith BMW quoted $1691 for repairs.

Ouch, sorry to hear and see the damage to our precious Z4.

At least it wasn't a hit and run and you'll have your Z4 good as new w/o any out of pocket on your end. The bad part is not having your Z for a while.

Price is actually surprisingly fair, is that with a new bumper or are they just repainting it? And is the $1691 with labor? If it's new bumper & taillights plus paint to match the car, I think it's pretty good.

What a bummer! Hope you can get it fixed quickly.

I just got my Z4 two weeks ago and I already damaged the right rear side panel. I've gotta take it in for a quote tomorrow. :-(

Thanks rfx45 This is my first accident so I didn't know if the quote was fair or not. Bob Smith quoted $689 for "Bumper trim pan" , $406 for tail light, and $500 for "rear paint + labor".

Nikki, I don't know about your state motor vehicle laws but usually there's a $ limit that if exceeded requires a damage report. Just sayin....
Best of luck getting your baby back to new!

This seems fair. Very consistent with similar front-end damage (bumper cover + fog light) to my Lexus IS when I hit a large racoon a while back.

Poor raccoon. Did it survive?

In CA, it seems the minimum is $750 worth of damage to report the accident to the DMV.

Quote:
When you have a collision, report it to the DMV using the SR 1 form. You or your insurance agent, broker, or legal representative must complete the SR 1 report and send it to the DMV within 10 days if someone is injured (no matter how minor the injury) or killed or property damage is over $750. The SR 1 report is required in addition to any other report made to the police, CHP, or your insurance company.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures...cts/ffdl16.htm

In your case though, since you didn't go through the insurance companies but did go through the dealership, they might still report it as damaged and it might still go to the carfax record. I know this wouldn't be the case if you went with an independent shop who is willing to overlook it but in your case, I am not sure.

I scraped the bottom of the front bumper within the first 2 weeks.... Since then, I always turn on the PDC no matter how silly it looks. Figure I won't have it repaired until lease end and only if they make me. If I fix it now, I'll just scrape it again the very next day!

Did you scrape the bumper itself to just the bottom? Because I can't imagine them charging you when you return your lease for a scraped bottom.

Just the underside of the front bumper. You have to lay on the floor in front of the car to actually see it.

Then you can probably get away with it unless they become real picky with it. That was the case with my friends G35 when he returned it, it might be a case by case basis though.

People over a certain age (say, 70) should be banned from driving, and if they do and they are caught then shooting is the only option!!!

Actually I go with after 60, every 5 years, they have to take a driving test. I would hate to be the tester tho

We do it for pilots: medical every 3 years, every 2 over 40 (private pilots), over 60 can't fly airliners, etc.

The same should be done for drivers. Medical & driving test every 5 years, every 3 over 60.

Some people, like my own father, drive quite well in their 70's. Some suck even at 30.

Hope you got his agreement to pay for the damage in writing. My elderly Mom had a similar incident where a young girl backed into her car and then pleaded with her to not report the accident to the police. Started crying- the whole nine yards....The girl said she would pay for all repair costs.

Mom was such a nice person that she felt bad for the girl and agreed not to report the accident . When she gave the estimate to the girl, everything changed ! You can guess what happened- the girl now claimed the accident wasn't her fault, and wasn't going to pay anything.

What a mess- I think Mom had to go through her own insurance company to get it fixed. Don't remember if they ever went after the girl or not, but it was definitely a good lesson in getting things in writing....
