Z4 M update?

hey there guys,

I was wondering if you guys could help me out since i haven't been able to find any updated information on this.

I currently work in Dubai and own a 2009 cayman S. I plan over the next 12 months to send my porsche back home(Lebanon) so i can use it there whenever i travel back and forth for work/holidays (quite frequently).

Now.... im a sucker for 2 seater sport cars and that's all im ever really intereseted in. Having said that, once i send over My P car i will need to purchase another car here for my daily use and i was thinking of the Z4... but the M version. Has any updated news arisen concerning wether BMW will/might produce this car or is it still a big nono.

i really don't want to have to buy a TT-RS(even though it's bloody fast). If their is even a hint of it i will probably wait it out and rent a car till i can put down a deposit for it.

I love BMW but i just cant see myself getting a regular Z4 IS or anything that isnt M. once you get used to that suspension and stiffness and lets not forget the power i dont think there is turning back

thanks in advance for any help or info.

Sry mate, nothing but it looks like it's not going to happen. Have you considered waiting for the 1M??

The 35is is meant to fill the role of the previous z4 m. Disappointing really.

an M Coupe would be awesome but here is to dreaming - the iS with black sapphire, walnut interior, and most options would be killer though.

I have actually looked at the 1M to be honest. Like i said though i prefer strictly 2 seaters from that nimble feel. Though i'm sure the 1M will be fun as hell i just don't see it being as nimble or having less body roll than a Z4M or caymanS.

Add to the fact that the new 1 series will most probably be introduced next year and i just don't see the point.

I will definetly test it when its launched here though. But heres to hoping they change thier minds and give the Z4M the go ahead.

P.S im quite optimistic that BMW will eventually launch the Z4M. they always do this when asked about future models and deny their production so the consumer buys NOW... at least that's what I seemed to have picked up with them :P

I thought the 35i (maybe the 35is?) was supposed to be as powerful as the previous Z4m?

The Z4M has 330 HP and 262/lb-ft.

The 35i is more powerful than the previous generation Z4M. It has already been proven as a fact that the 35i has 332 HP, not the conservative 300 HP figure BMW says it has. The 35i has 332 lb.-ft. of Torque, not the 300 BMW states.

The 35is probably has 370 HP instead of the 335 BMW says it has. This has not been proven yet, but probably soon will.

Look - I have owned an M Coupe, Z4 3.0i and now the new 35i. The 35i will smoke them all, even stock (i.e. without our performance modifications). That being said, as a pure driver's car the M Coupe is still tops in my book and I should have kept it as an occasional track car to ring out. The 35i is the perfect blend between comfort and two-seater sports car in my mind - that is why my wife loves it so much = extremely stylish, aggressive, fast, and lots of technology + convertible.

Interesting. Do you have a link (source) for these figures?

Start with an E89 Z4 with sport suspension and manual tranny. Add Stage 2 Dinan or ESS tuning, perhaps a couple of sway bars, and you'll get yourself a nice M-worthy Z4.

An M is more than straight-line performance.

There's the M limited slip differential and the M brakes for starters.

Not to mention a different steering set up...

... but ultimately it's largely about marketing ...

Do you guys think they may bring a Z4 M version once the M3 phases out of it's current shell?? Kind of like the last Z4 M roadster came out right when the E46 M3 started to phase out in 2006 and the M Roadster inherited the same engine in 2006? It's probable that BMW doesn't want the M Z4 to out perform the current M3 if they were to drop the V8 now. Just being hopeful here.....

Good point flpnout. I think BMW will wait too.

Lack of 'Ring spyshots make me a bit doubtful of the Z4 LBR ?

I think the 35is runs around 14psi boost tops, so that would logically mean more than a +35HP gain. 370HP might be pushing it though.

I did see a 335is dyno, but looked a tad low.

The current Z4 35i out performs the current DCT M3.
that i tried for 5 times in a row.

any speed under 50 the z4 wins.

Dinan is already pushing that number harder with his Stage II for the 35i is at 384 hp and 421 tq, and it has a warranty. He kicks up those figures slightly with the 3 series n54 at 398 hp and 429 tq.

The problem I see with the dyno data out there lately is they are using mom and pop store chassis dyno's and they are having trouble converting rear wheel horsepower figures to brake horsepower. Typically you see a 18 -20 percent drop from brake hp to RW, but some people were saying the figure is really only around 10 percent.

Dinan has an engine dyno but he also has a chassis dyno, but it's one that removes the rear wheel and connects directly to the rear axles because he says the normal wheel/roller has too much slippage due to the tire and produces inconsistent figures. The other problem with the mom and pop operations is they don't have sufficient air movement through the radiator. Dinan has a virtual wind tunnel fan to simulate +70 mph speed, otherwise he says the computer changes the ignition timing and fuel settings - thus less hp - to prevent engine overheating.

So when you look at the mom and pop dyno data, you not sure what you really seeing. Some recent 3 series n55 chassis dyno data actually looked like the RW hp figures were higher than BMWs published brake hp figures. I know BMWs figures are very conservative but that's somewhat questionable.

Now you just need to put on some non-RFTs and you will have a fun track car too.
