Power Steering Changes...

I was looking back through the archives to see if there was a topic related to the difference in steering feel in comfort mode through the 2009 - 2016 production run. One thread had someone who had a recall on his model and noticed a difference in the steering (heavier) post service.

I recently sold my 2011 with manual tranny. On that car the steering felt reasonably light until you flipped into sport mode... then a big change.

My new arrival is a DCT 2015, and the steering in comfort mode is far heavier than it was in my 2011... and I find very little difference when I switch to sport anymore.

Not complaining, as I find this steering gives far more feedback and response to small movements is more accurate.

Does anyone know if there was an official change in specifications from one model year to the next? I was thinking possibly that the steering might have been tuned differently for mt/dct cars... bot don't hold much stock in that.

Its possible steering feels heavier because DCT xsm is heavier than manual. Its also possible there were changes in caster which would give same result.

You can find the technical documents on the forum. I believe it was stickied. It tells you what hardware, software, and the effects.

I think the "is" cars also get an upgraded power steering pump too.

The Z4 has an electric motor assisted steering rack. There is no power steering pump.

A little off topic but I think it's rediculous that every time I go to the dealer they annotate on my invoice that I'm due for a power steering fluid change. The service advisor should be embarrassed...

Ha! Dont assume your SA knows anything about your car!

If you find a good SA then do everything you can to support and keep them. Survey responses go a long way.

you should make an appointment specifically for the power steering fluid change and see what they do. Oh and your local television station might be very interested in the outcome.
