Optional Anti-theft Alarm System

We did not order the optional Anti-theft Alarm System for our 2010 Z4 s35i, but do have the overly large red signal thingy beneath the auto-dimming and universal garage door opening rearview mirror. Does the red alarm light serve any purpose or do anything (other than look ugly) if one does not have the optional Anti-theft Alarm System?

all bimmers come prewired, so that the stealership can add what you want, reprogram the computer and set you on your way. i do hate the clown nose though...
