Best setting for drifting?
Hey guys, which settings do you use for kicking the tail out on your z4?
I have the adaptive M suspension, and was wondering which setting is best to get the tail out in your opinion. I have been trying in sport+ mode, as sport mode dont really allow any loss of traction. But there is also an OFF button above the normal/sport/sport+ settings button. If you click this something happens, but if you hold it, something else comes up. Do these setting further loosen up the car? |

The DCS OFF setting certainly helps you a lot when driving in the snow ...
(should be helping you drifting on non covered tarmac too ;-) But I didn't try it yet on dry roads yet ... (maybe in a few hours)

Sport+ mode deactivates Dynamic Stability Control / activates Dynamic Traction Control. An icon of a car with the word "Off" is displayed on the instrument cluster. The suspension is tighter with limited driving stability, allowing for drifting. You can deactivate DSC / activate DTC in any shifting mode by also pressing the "Off" button just in front of the normal/sport/sport+ button.
Hope this helps.

I can't attach the video; it has the wrong extension. Go to www.bmwusa.com, hover on "owners", select "owner's manual", click on the "Z4 driving dynamics control owner's manual" video. It shows exactly what you're questioning.

That one is hilarious. I think I watch it three time in a row the first.

How do you drift a car with an open diff?

The best option for drifting would have been to walk into your Nissan dealer's showroom instead of the BMW dealer's and purchase the 370Z instead of the Z4

> DSC on (the default) has full stability control and full traction control enabled. This is Normal or Sport mode. > Sport+ (or brief press of Trac Off) enables DTC for dynamic traction control. Wheel spin is possible (and some tail out ability) but stability control is still enabled for a safety net. I was told the Z4 could still snap spin if not careful in this mode. > DSC off (long press of Trac Off) disables both DSC and any traction control. You are on your own in complete control with no safety net. Best for snow is a short press of Trac Off. You can spin the tires to get un-stuck but it will help prevent sliding into something. Sport+ will do that same thing but may make the throttle too sensitive.

After the long press of DSC Off button, thereby making both DSC and Traction off, how does one reactivate DSC: quick press of DSC Off button or move to either Normal or Sport modes?

Just as a side note you do get what BMW call an 'E-diff' activated with DSC full off. It is an 'electronic differential' but not as good of course as a proper LSD. It is not activated in the other modes.

Hmm, I didn't know that. Does that mean the 'E-diff' only works when both DSC and Traction are off?

Yeah I just checked the brochure where I read it first and it states that when DSC & Traction are off the electronic limited slip differential is activated which enables breathtaking acceleration out of corners.
I have this on my 135i. If I want the traction system kicking in less (eg when taking off at the lights fast) I simply turn on DTC only mode that enables more slip, and allows more 'power' to the ground. I rarely need to use the all off mode. It's funny why BMW quote the 135i as slower when it weighs less and has the same power output. They quote higher fuel consumption of the Z4 35i though which makes me wonder if the 35i has a more aggressively tuned engine? |

I kind of doubt that the 135i is slower than the Z4: in the various mag roadtests it seems that they are either virtually identical or 135i comes very slightly ahead. BMW is screwed up like that since they have the exact same engine but there is a tangible price diff.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but isn't the "electronic limited slip" really just the ABS system detecting wheel spin and applying enough brake to the spinning wheel to transfer the power to the other side? It's not a true elctronic locking diff of a clutched limited slip.
Next question, anyone know if the Z has the same diff as the 335i? |
