Wheel replacement Advice for newbie

Hi guys,

I'm getting a headache trying to figure out the cost of changing wheels on my 2014 28i. It is currently stock with the 17" wheels and RFT.

So here goes my attempt to learn... maybe others can use this as a guide.

If I want to go up in size, without changing the suspension, what are my options?

I would like 19" or even 20" if they do not require additional suspension work.

Which 19" size wheels do I need to search for? I like the 35i M wheels...

I think these are it

Please correct me if I'm wrong. What style # is this? and do they fit without additional cost?

Thank guys.

stock wheels from another E89 will fit no problem.

I am switching from 19" to 18" wheels to reduce the cost of replacing tires, and to avoid the chance of cracking my style 296 wheels.

Personally, I think 19 is the largest size for the Z4 because the sidewall is already quite small

will previous year cars like 3 series or 5 series work too?

Is the 296 the "trouble child" of rims? and is mine pictured the 296?

Those are not the 296s. The 296s are prone to cracking due to small sidewall (low profile) and the rigidity of RFTs, reducing the ability to cushion the impact from potholes, transferring all the force to the poorly designed rims and cracking it.

The ones you have pictured are the 326s, which come on the 35iS. They will be a direct replacement for your 2013 28i.

As for 3 and 5 series wheel, they may or may not be direct bolt-on, depending on offset. You would have to give us a specific wheel to know for sure, but generally it will fit but you may need spacers.

19 seems to be the "best" size in terms of aesthetics, however, 20s can be fitted (this would be THE maximum to avoid rubbing, fender rolling, a lot of negative camber, etc.) But as Nick mentioned, this would be a very very small sidewall as well.

As for aftermarket wheels if you are looking to go that direction, well then you are opening a whole different can of worms in regards to not just rim size, but width as well. You will need to give us specifics to know if they will fit or not.

In other words, if you want absolute fitment, direct bolt-on, no hassle/no homework, your options are the OEM 19s from the E89, which include the:

296
326
and BMW Performance 313

BMW does not make stock 20s for the E89.

Why didn't you just order the car with bigger wheels to start with?

I have the #293- 18 inch - enough sidewall for my Pilot Super Sports- that really make driving on rough roads a lot more comfortable - I had the same 293 rims on a 2009 Z-4 - never had any problems with cracking wheels either - however getting rid of the RunFlats was the best thing I ever did - its worth the money - and you will feel the difference every time you drive the vehicle !

I like the way my car looked with AG 359M (M3 ZCP wheel replica)
If I remember correctly, offset & size:
19x9 et 35
19x10 et 38

https://www.dropbox.com/s/jipfcwu2295vvd8/z4%20%202.jpg
And since its replica, I cracked the wheel within 3 months of ownership by hitting a pothole.
If you come from stock 18", you'll need to drop the car with at least lowering springs.
Here's a pic of it before it was lowered (wheel gap bothered me so I went with Eibach Pro-Kit)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f18wd1f1too9bcu/z4.jpg

After wheel was cracked I went with 19" Volks G12 + Michelin PSS
19x9 et 20
19x10 et 25

With the PSS, tires were rubbing so badly that I had to remove the Eibach and went with KW V3. Stiffer ride and no more rubbing, raised the car slightly higher compared to the Eibach springs.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zzzssw8tjz...skaggs%201.jpg

Hope this helps

Can you elaborate on this statement? Wouldn't going from 18s to 19s make it less likely for you to need lowering, since you probably went up in overall size?

Also, I was watching Family Guy a few days ago and when I saw Peter, I instantly thought of you and that quote. Ha!

Thank you. I saw the AG 359M today... They are what I'm looking for. Looks great. Just one question: When you hit that pothole and they cracked... were you on RFTs?

Why would you need to lower the car if the OP has stock 17's and he wants to go up in size? Yes the suspension is different from the 28i to the 35is, however you don't need to lower the car if you want to put bigger wheels and tires on the car. If the OP is going to put the same wheels that are from another e89 he doesn't need to do anything to the car itself, aside from buying the wheels and tires and paying someone to put them on the vehicle.

Sorry - let me clarify. You don't need lowering springs / coilover. I just hated the wheel gap look.

When I hit the pothole, I was running 265/35/19 not RFT

I assume you mean 265/30. Regardless, I think you cracked because you used their "recommended" stretched tires size, not so much the build quality of the wheel itself (similar to 296 on RFTs)

I have 19x9 up front and 19x19 in the rear, and even 245/35 and 275/30s are just a tiny bit stretched to my liking.

You're right. I was running 235/35 and 265/30.
Does your tires rub with the 245/35 and 275/30? What's your offset on the wheels?

Offset is 35F/38R, which I based off of your post from when you got your wheels to ensure that I don't rub That's why I was hesitant to get 245/275 at first.

In terms of rubbing, the fronts are just perfect. 1/4 of an inch when turning the wheel all the way from touching the fender liner. The rear is a lot more flush compared to OEM offset, but it does still have maybe around an inch of clearance. In normal driving and going slow on speed bumps (as you should with this car's overall clearance anyway) you should be fine. I am concerned about high speed dips on roads/highways... but so far haven't experienced it yet. I'd imagine if it was bad enough to rub on these, it would have rubbed on OEM as well, but that's just speculation.

Would definitely recommend 245/275 for those running 19s, as it doesn't cause any rubbing and isn't super stretched. Fills the wheel well very well too

The AG359M's... Same ones that SNK had, except they're black and on 245/35Fs and 275/30Rs.

Ok, no more, sorry

Yeah, if I'm not mistaken, I think Atacama Yellow has to be ordered with Citrus Package, while Citrus Package can be ordered on other exterior colors separately. When it was available anyway.

Didn't do any interior shots cause it's a bit dirty in there but you can see a bit of the yellow Alcantara on the door.
