It's possible that it is AWD and the chains up front are for steering and braking.

Good point silver-bolt, hadn't considered the AWD angle.

It's a 4-door sedan. Do they make a 1-series 4-door?

The earth seems to be severely tilted to the right on its axis.

I don't recall when that happened. Perhaps I was really drunk at the time.

I had the 118d version of that 1 series 4 door hatchback as my Sixth Rental car in Germany. Gas was impressive. Not a bad little car. I would probably get one as my city car if they had them in the US. It seems to have a lot of power for a 4 banger. I was able to to take up to 225km on the autobahn.

I ended up changing it for for a Ford wagon with snow tires when it started snowing as I started sliding all over the place in the 1 Series car. Scary when there is snow on the ground. Of course I did not grow up driving in the snow.

Here is a pic of my rental with my colleague scraping ice waiting for me to get in the driver side as neither one of us wanted to drive in the snow....we ended up flipping a coin and I lost.
