My car wouldn't start... now it won't shut off

2014 Z4 Comfort Access.

Key is in the key slot, and the amber KEY icon was lit. Couldn't start the car. Couldn't start accesories.

Somehow, after trying for 35 minutes, the car started.

Now as I'm driving it, my vehicle status page says, Engine Start Malfunction. Try opening and closing driver side door.

Now, in Park, at home... my car won't turn off. WTF?

Car is still running. Any ideas?

Put a potato into the tailpipe. Put water in the gas tank. Cut the fuel line. Do not attempt any of the above.

It's an automatic.

Drove it to the dealer. They have never seen this. It's in their hands now. I'll post an update next week when I get the car back.

That's an annoying thing to have to deal with for a brand new car

The alternator would have kept it running. They would have had to pull the fuel pump relay or fuse to kill the engine.

Never heard of a car not shutting off. What happened btw? Will dealer cover the gas that was wasted? Is it possible that its a 28i issue?

I seem to have a similar problem. 2010 6spd 35i with comfort access. Car didn't start last night. On first try the engine turned over once but then stopped when I released the start/stop button. Now all that is happening is some sort of spooling/whining noise when I push the start button. No error messages anywhere. iDrive tells me all systems OK. The instrument cluster comes on and I can use the radio etc so I doubt this is a battery issue. The engine isn't running but I'm not able to turn off the car with the start/stop button. Pushing it while all the electrical systems are on does nothing. I have to insert the keyfob and pull it back out for the car to power down. Let it sit all night and tried again this morning with the same result. Going to have it towed to the dealer tomorrow :/

Sometimes I cannot get my computer to turn off. Not surprising that our computerized cars have similar issues.

That is the behavior for a non comfort access car.

Total speculation here, but maybe your key fob battery just needs to be changed.

The spooling/whining noise sounds to me like the starter solenoid is not engaging, so the motor is just spinning and not moving the starter gear to mesh with the flywheel gear.

This can happen because of a bad solenoid/starter or a low/bad battery (loose or corroded terminals can cause low voltage to the starter also.

90% of the time if the battery is fine they change the entire starter since that also replaces the solenoid.

I'll put the battery on a tender when I get home and try my luck starting the car with a new battery in the keyfob and/or the second keyfob. If all fails it'll be towed to the dealership tomorrow. Luckily I'm still within warranty so should be free, unless it's the battery. I've had a low battery on my 530xit before and all sorts of things were malfunctioning because of that. This doesn't seem to be the case here.

I wonder if this can be related to the battery terminal recall, did you have that done?

Just got a call back from the dealer. No power at the starter. Replaced under warranty. Seems WAY early for a starter to go. Car has under 30k miles!

It is too early , but stuff happens. that's what warranties are for.

Sorry for the delayed reply.

Here was the diagnostic. The start/stop button wiring harness was pinched, as was the comfort access harness. It was pinched at the factory during assembly. They replaced the harness and all is normal.

Cheers

WOW. No one but the dealer would have found that one. That dash is Pre assembled and goes in complete. What a strange issue.
Great you got it sorted out.
