Lightbulb Comparison: New Mercedes SLK vs BMW Z4

Mercedes pulling the wraps off their new SLK (R172) is reason enough for another photo comparison. This one is particularly interesting as BMW's move to build the current Z4 (E89) with a folding steel roof makes it all the more of a natural rival to the SLK. Mercedes pretty much started the segment of hardtop roadsters by launching the first generation SLK in 1996.

The new SLK appears to incorporate design cues from the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG such as the muscular front fascia. Mercedes also advanced their 3.5L V6 engine which now develops 302hp in the SLK 350 and thus is on par with the Z4 35i (300hp).

If that's too much for your liking, there's also an SLK 250 powered by a turbo 4 developing 201hp. No surprise then that BMW is said to replace the naturally aspirated inline 6 in the Z4 30i with a turbo 4-cylinder later this year.

But enough talk, here are the pics. Enjoy!

Great side by side comparisons. Thanks for sharing. I still say our 300 horses are stronger than their 302.

I think the SLK has a nicer face and profile. That's about it.

The Z4's rear end and interior (can't believe I'm saying this) is more attractive than the SLK's.

I'm a great fan of the Z4 but I have to admit, the SLK looks much better than before and even better than the Z4.

It's a bit too clear that the SLK has quite old roots.

Think I preferred the old one.

In sport trim SLK looks better than z4 and this thread needs more interior pictures comparisons, new slk interior is amazing, but z4 is hot too and looks better in non sport trim

Kinda funny how Benz used the same color scheme as BMW: red and beige. Seems like they wanted people to compare these two cars directly.

I think you might have a point here, in order for MB to do a better job they have to get some design help from a female I think, meanwhile Z4 still rocks

The SLK side mirror placement just looks odd. No antenna- how does MB handle that?
