Guy takes 3 years off and travels the world

I thought this was pretty awesome. Every time I see stuff like this I get so jealous! If you really think about it a lot of us could totally travel more but we don't for whatever reason, besides money. There is so much to see out there, Bravo to this gentlemen

Pretty cool. There are only two types of people in this world.. You have those who live their lives and those who simply exist. This guy is actually living life.

Would be intrigued to see not only photos of travel, but expense spreadsheet(s).

I had a buddy who just did that. Young guy ( 24 ), nothing holding him down but a 1000 dollar beater car and some furniture. Industry is in a downtown and he just quit in the middle of a management meeting to the CEO. First step is a yoga retreat in Columbia and see where it goes from there.

While i think it sounds like an interesting thing to do i disagree with the concept that if you don't fuck off and hostel around the world for a few years you are "just existing" . Different strokes for different folks.

I know 100% that I wouldn't like living like that, but don't fault the people who do.

I have lived in 3rd world countries before, its not all its cracked up to be. I have grown to quite appreciate the comforts of modern civilization. Not to mention fast cars.

I dont think he is stating that you need to travel like this to live, but more along the lines of getting out there and do exciting stuff and not get stuck in the day to day rut aka just exist.

Living life means doing the things you love doing as opposed to slaving all day at some fucking job you hate and then coming home to miserably crash on the couch. Followed up by a call to a friend to complain about how your life sucks, yet not doing anything to change it.

Face it most people out there are in the existing category.

Funny. This is the exact situation I am in now. I hate my job. I put in a request to take a few months off and travel around for my bday this Fall.

My wife and I have been to 27 countries in 7 years together. Our plan is to continue to see at least 3 countries a year. Next year's plan is South America. Brazil, Argentina and Costa Rica. We alternate between beach/city, summer/winter

I took a year off to do this when I got out of the Air Force in 2008. www.Adamandshawn.wordpress.com It's not like your one-week major destination resort kind of "vacation". You can travel in 75% of the world for far less money than it takes to just live life in American, Australia, or Western Europe- it's a different mindset than a typical vacation. In that year, I spent $50-60k for TWO people, $13k of that being the mortgage on the house I couldn't sell, another k or so for insurance, $6k each for flights, and a few expensive splurges (Galapagos, Bhutan, diving trip in Aus)...figure $13k for those. So...HALF that money was in splurges and home expenses...the rest was quite cheap. Indonesia, for example...we were living for like $750/ month....COMBINED! This was at the peak of the recession (which is why I couldn't sell my house), and the exchange rate SUCKED....like $1.75/euro

The dirty secret of long-term travel though is burnout. By the time I got to Buenos Aires....via Europe, Asia and Australia, I just got an apartment for a few weeks and sat on ass. Didnt' even want to hassle with a side trip to Iguazu falls. It's a slower pace than vacation travel, but the constant planning and uprooting every couple weeks takes a toll. Ideally, you'd want to do this in two two-month blocks per year, and run a business back home the other 8 months.

I'm still tempted to do it again to make a video like this! At least I have my travel blog. Alternatively, a 34 year old friend of mind, by living a very modest lifestyle, has just RETIRED from full time work. He's going to do rock-climbing guiding on the side. Another very modest lifestyle friend is retired in his early 40's. He only made like $26/hour.

I'm getting very tempted to sell it all and live modest. Bimmer and all. Living out of a daypack and a roller for a year makes you realize how little we actually need our stuff. I can get a Subaru and perhaps a motorcycle for fun.

Folks,

With most of the jobs each of you have, agencies are seeking your skills overseas.

You can travel and work in many places throughout the world. All the major consulting companies like McKinsey, all the major big companies, US State Dept, Department of Defense, DEA, etc, etc. Even universities have international presence.

I've said to many people, whatever job you have now, try to take at least one international assignment, you won't regret it! Most of the time, they give you a stipend for housing and even food per diem.

Oh, and you don't have to be single. Many organizations even fund international schools for your kids to attend.

I've done this before. It's really not that difficult. Just get rid of all your debt, save for a little while and then just go. I sold most all of my stuff before going and put the rest in storage. I actually found out how to run my own business and work from the computer and make money while I was traveling so I could have made it last much longer if I wanted to.

It depends what type of job. Most USG government agencies have an international component. Industry also has, but you have to be specific in what type of career you are currently in.

What career field are you in now and are you working for a commercial company?

I "may" know something off the top of my head, but this job market is so large I won't know all the different ways, but I know a few...
