Arrow New Z4 track photos and interior shots shows DCT! (10/14/08)

Make sure to see additional pics on page 3!

It's getting close to the LA Autoshow debut!!

BMW has dropped some camouflage from its Z4, giving us our best look yet at the new lines for BMW's revised roadster. We also managed to get some new interior shots, showing some retina-searing red leather and it's revised dashboard layout.

That IS the DCT and will debut for US models the transmission. The marketing folks made that call.

Also worth noting is the electronic parking brake... and adjustable suspension settings (left of tranny).

Sorry guys, you may or may not be correct. That is the same setup in the 335i and the 535/550i sport transmission, which on those cars is a ZF planetary system. Not a DCT, but still a VERY FAST shifting auto with a torque converter capable of full lock up. Shift times sit around 100 milliseconds compared to 80 found in SMG II/III.

Not quite, there is an inherent difference and here is a photo of a 335i E92 with the NEW non ///M DCT. The rest of the world gets this but the US. The non ///M DCT will debut in the Z for the US (marketing reasons supposedly). The Z was caught with this transmission a while ago but was not confirmed until recent.

The 335 w/ ZF does not have the "joystick" only the DCT has it.

They wanted to add interior space, ie storage and clean up the lines of the middle console. I agree this is going to be interesting though....

looks great - the transmission is key. im gonna get this car.

however my 335 changing of gears with the paddles sucks without SMG

SMG is a click for gears, on the other hand the one i have currently, feels like a sedan to be honest with autoshifts each time your redline it in manual.

not precise by any means

Forgive the ignorance, but would someone mind giving me a quick rundown on the similarities and differences between SMG, DCT, and steptronic.

Thanks.

Where are you getting that from? The picture above is a DCT transmission in the 3er and the Z will get it as well. The 3 series does NOT have the joystick as an option with the auto, only the DCT gets a joystick (different than the E-shifter)in 335 E92 in markets outside the US. The Z with normal auto will not see the joystick either.

Sources have stated this for about 5 months now.

I am not getting into a pissing contest here just trying to explain something in a fact based manner which some people appreciate...

Note this picture of the Z with the normal auto.

This is the E60 E-Shifter, different shape than the DCT seen in the previous post.
