For those that own a VW Golf

How roomy is it? Possible to fit 4 6ft adults comfortably? How about 4 carryons in the back/trunk?

Rear legroom is a tad of a squeeze but you shouldn't have a problem. I've had 4 people in my Golf R with luggage in the back with no issues. Depends on how large the luggage is really but if they're each carry-on size, you should be good.

Yeah, I could fit 4 6' tall folks in our old 135i for a a few minutes. Hell, I even fit a third person in my M Coupe for half an hour, but comfort was undoubtably low.

I'm 6'2" and shopping Golf Rs and GTIs and can sit behind myself with the seats adjusted. It's not as much room as our F30, but really not far off, maybe an inch or so.

This would be for about 4-6 hours trips. My friends and I are look at renting a car in Europe to mainly drive between cities (4-6 hrs each way). Deciding between a Golf (or similar) and an X1 (or similar). Golf is about 15% cheaper and some said it fits but if it's gonna be cramped, I'd rather pay more for the X1. Mainly concerned with ability to fit up to 4 carryons in the boot.

X1 is not that big. I rented a Benz wagon in Germany and had me (small and driving) and three huge guys in it no problem.

I'd explore something like that or even something cool we can't get here like an A6 or 5 series wagon.

I am 6' tall and can sit behind myself without an issue.
My wife actually sits in the exact position that I do (she has long legs) and when I sit behind her I have plenty of legroom.

To answer your question: Yes, absolutely four - six foot tall people can fit without a problem. Four carry-ons are not an issue at all either. You'll have space left over.

An extra $20 per day (split 4 ways) to step up to a 3-series or c-class allowing you to remain comfortable has surely got to be worth the extra coin.

Agree with the above, if in doubt everyone chips in an extra $5 a day to be more comfortable? I can't see this mattering much on anyone's travels around Europe.

I agree with you guys that the difference is very minimal when splitted amongst all of us. However, we won't be driving every day. It's basically to transport us from one city to the next and while we're in those cities (3-5 days each), the car will sit idle as we'll be walking mostly.

Trains cost almost as much as renting a car and buses have pretty weird schedules (the cheapest options leave very, very early in the morning). That's why we looked into car rentals. Since we won't be driving it everyday, I wanted to minimize the sunk cost.

I suppose being a little bit cramped just adds to the experience and the memories.

True dat. Lol

So it seems like 4 adults and 4 carryons will fit in a Golf. If we want more room then go with a station wagon or the X1. A bit iffy when some say the Golf would fit perfectly while others say only for very short trips.

Do yourself a favor. Most cars I've rented are set to English but double check and have them switch at the airport before you leave with the car. Nav in German isn't much fun, except for the juvenile bathroom humor of ausfart.

To the OP I think the Golf will be fine. If you are really interested stop by a VW dealer and there is likely to be one in the showroom.

Wife and I got back from Croatia recently and Verizon and AT&T both put us on our standard U.S. plan for $10 a day. Then we just used our phones for everything, far better than any aftermarket or built in GPS (and they threw in their GPS for free).

That's not a bad deal at all. International roaming can get VERY expensive something to keep an eye on. I just use my work phone when abroad but as David suggested this is definitely something to figure out.

My Verizon phone is paid for by work and we pay for my wife's phone. Even the work phone I can save them a lot of money with a quick call to IT telling them the dates and where I will be. I go to Canada a lot and call them on the way. I was concerned that even then I shouldn't use my phone for personal calls if it was going to cost a lot, they said $10 a day so I was good to go as they didn't care. You do have to get on a plan or you will pay a lot more and there were other options.

We then decided to see what AT&T would do for my wife and it was the same deal. For $10 a day it was nice for her to be able to use the phone and data like she always does and $100 for the whole trip (Crotia, Montenegro, France) didn't matter enough to bother with limiting her use.

That's smart. My phone is always hooked up with international roaming I travel so much it's not worth turning it off.

Trains have tons of room. That's what I use almost exclusively when in Europe

We did a spreadsheet on cost for buses, trains, and cars. Trains and cars cost almost the same so we're thinking car is the best option.

Thanks for confirming. I was thinking the same. Would have stopped by today but there's no VW dealer at the nearest Auto Mall (surprisingly). Will stop by tomorrow when I pick up my car from BMW service.

As for data, we have TMOBILE and it offers free, unlimited 4G data in all the countries we'll be in. Planning on using our phones for navigation and such. Only thing that'll cost $ are calls, but we will use Viber or FT or WhatsApp if needed.
