What's this control for?

Couldn't find it in the manual. Climate bias?

Adjusts air coming out of the vent making it more hot or cold.

yes - your central air vents can be very cold despite your "automatic air" setting, so this allows you a little fine tuning

it's how much engine heat you want to include in the airflow. It's been around for a long time in different forms (my 2003 530i has it). For the new X5/X6 it's now included in the iDrive climate settings which can be a problem as you might easily forget the setting - in which case you may be defeating your a/c (expensive) air with heated (cheap) air.

It always struck me as goofy as what's the point in having a thermostat if you can glom it with one flick of a dial?

hope this helps...

I think its been a feature on all BMWs since the 80's or maybe before that.

My'08 550i has it in the iDrive. Quite a pain to adjust, even with the quick access button.

Garage List
I find it useful in the case of the Z4. I can have a little extra warmth on my face with the top down on cool days (and extra cool air on hot days) without having to adjust the temp for all the other vents.

Not as effective as Mercedes' Air Scarf, but still useful.

As for why you'd need this in a sedan is beyond me...

I like this option...

Invarably my wife always seems to be more cold than I am.. We have had this feature in our E46 and I really like the ability to have cool air on my face while having the heat on.. That way my passengers are comfortable but I do not have to put up with Dry Eyes from the heat blowing on my chest and face.
