If you went for the MB, you'd have to get used to the noise, i.e. quiet and no rattles or squeaks ;-)

We had a CLS for just over 3 years before the e89, very different car, but very well built and more than enough performance from the big diesel especially with the dealer fitted Brabus upgrade.

Hi ! I traded my E89 for a Mercedes E class convertible e350 CDI (A207 model). I have had it 12 months now. To be honest have never looked back and love the extra space and rear seats. Mine has the AMG package and quite highly specd. The interior is more solidly built and dare I say of higher quality materials.
The drive is completely different but my car is no slouch when it comes to pace and road holding. But then I new that as I have had Mercedes in the past, including proper AMG models.
I continue to follow this forum as my brother has an E89 and like to keep him up to date with what is going on!!!
By the way I enjoyed the drive on the E89, but do I miss it ? Not in the slightest.

I own and currently have both, a 2010 E550 Coupe and a recently acquired 2011 E89 sDrive35is. I am bias towards bigger engines. They are very different cars and it really depends on what your goal and priority is. If I had to keep one I would keep the E550 Coupe, just overall balanced daily driver, luxury and comfort for long commutes and company...and sporty Umpf when I need it. The two back seats are usable for small people. BUt it is a very different (less fun) driving experience than the E89.

However, I bought the E89 only 7 days after selling my E85, I guess convertible withdrawal, can;t live without a convertible in the stable.

Both are great solid cars you cant go wrong with either one.

Well what can I say. You guys were right. Lovely car but drove very normally on quite stiff suspension tbh. It gave me no 'fizz' feeling so that's that.

What engine did you test? I had the same feel when I tested the E250CGI (Petrol).

The e220 diesel and the e350 diesel.

The only realistic options in the uk as the e200 petrol and e400 petrol aren't good enough on fuel.

I looked up the fuel econ ratings here in the US and the Z435 dct and the E63 get the same fuel economy, and the E550 is slightly better than the Z435

E550 and Z4 priced similar over here too

Maybe your opinion of E class will change when you there is a gas powered turbo V8 under the hood

Hi, jumping into and driving a diesel is a learning curve if you have never driven one before. Took me a while to get used to the change but the punch of the 350cdi actually beats the non-turbo 3.0ltr, the car is clearly heavier than the E89 !!! Driving a BMW you are involved with the road but the Mercedes kind of rides over it (best way I could describe it !!!) With the 350CDI you will hit 40 mpg at pace........ which you will never achieve with the BMW.
What guys in the States don't follow is HOW Expensive fuel is in the UK, it is not about affordability directly !
My car prior to the E89 was a BMW 6 Series 4.4ltrs of pure magic, still the best car I have ever owned, in fact the 640 is the only car that could entice me from my Merc at the moment........HMMMMM !! writing the statement makes me think !!!!!

I've owned diesels before so I knew what to expect. I don't analyse things too much these days I just wait to see how it makes me feel. And the merc didn't make me feel anything.. Back to the 35i and a feeling of home.

Do it! Go MB all the way. Seems to suite you more for what you are looking for.

you owe it to yourself to test a C63 That's the only Merc I care about as the rest of them feel like giant boats. Not much different from the 5/6/7 series though.

the reason there is no Z4M is because BMW know that the chassis is at the limits of its capabilities. you will also note that BMW seldom includes the Z4 E89 on track days, I have had heard many theories as to why this is, but mostly down to the fact that the car would not be considered "safe"........even though it has a " hard top".....

It's because it takes an AMG to provide the drivability of an non-M BMW.

OP did you try a C class coupe? I felt it was a more involving drive compared to an E-Class coupe but still nowhere near the "fizz" factor of an e89.

LOL. I wish this were true.

I'd be interested in comparing notes from the AMG you have tracked, since I've only experienced the C63 and E63 for about 10 laps each

I haven't but I'm not that sold on its styling I think it looks a bit bland down the sides of the car. I may keep my eye on the new C class as an option when it arrives. Just can't seem to find anything other than a 5 series I'd like to hop into and even the 5 series is starting to look a bit boring now, albeit better than most big saloons to drive.

Interestingly I have owned an AMG (slk32) and a standard model of a Mercedes SLK (320).
I was absolutely amazed how different the two cars were, the AMG was in a completely different league, not just performance and handling, but mostly in build quality.
It was obvious that the AMG version was not just about badging, it was basically rebuilt to AMG standard.
The same can be said of BMW's M series of cars.
Which is why I endorse the comment you have to try the two versions to understand the difference. All that said it will always be down to personal choice and how the car fits the individual.....
