Chrome exhaust tips And new member
Greetings everyone. After a decade with the three pointed star slk,I have finally moved over to the z4 e89 23i 2011. I have spent the last few weeks detailing the engine and bodywork, but there are still some jobs to do. I have recently changed the front upper and lower grills to the titanium type. My biggest issue was the state of the exhaust tips, which were sooted up and were not cleaning up very well. I checked with my local dealer to see if they could get me a pair of chrome tips, but they told me they were not on their accessory list. A quick check of the Internet revealed I could source them from Germany for about 120 GBP. A bit of research lead me to find that certain models of the X1 might fit. To cut a long story short I sourced a pair of tips from China ( ebay)for the princely sum of 16.89 GBP including delivery. For that price it was worth taking a chance. For all of you wanting to do the same and save a few quid I have attached a photo.
Hope this helps you. I do hope to contribute more to the forum as and when I carry out servicing work or repairs. |

My impression was that the tips are welded on. Did they just pull off in your car?

They are just pushed on but held in place by strips of metal that spring against the actual exhaust pipe. They were not easy to get off after 4 years but with a bit of twisting and pulling they do come off. There was no corrosion inside but the space was full if road grit which didn't help. The new ones just pushed straight back on and it is only a matter of turning it to match the angle of the actual exhaust pipe.

I can't understand the stock tips, they look like crap. I took mine off and had them chromed. I'm also looking for a pair of stainless ones, haven't found any yet. They look good!!

When I ordered these tips the advert said "chrome" but at the bottom it said "stainless steel". Either way they are very highly polished. The two tips were of different lengths so I put the shorter one on the inside. The angle of the tip was a perfect fit for the angle of the tail pipe. I had to make some minor adjustments to the spring clips to make it easier to slide on, but considering the cost and the fact they were advertised as being for an X1 I think they look fine. They are are great improvement on the stock ones.
