Possible to swap 335is cooling parts onto z4 35is?

Hey guys, I recently got myself into an z4 35is and was wondering if anybody could provide some information.

From what I've read about the n54, these motors apparently come out the factory with less than optimal cooling performance and I was wondering if it was possible to swap in all the additional cooling parts that the 335is gets over a standard n54 into a z4 35is. I would like to get a front mounted intercooler to assist with throttle response and keeping the intake air temps. as close to optimal as possible, but after consulting with my service adviser that would void my warranty.

Any input or thoughts about this decision? The one thing I really enjoy about my naturally aspirated 328 is how consistent and smooth the power delivery is. I knew every second of every day I drove it; how much performance the motor was going to deliver with how ever much throttle input I give it. No matter how many times I would take the car to redline it would perform exactly the same over run after run after run. The z4, although straight line performance is substantially greater than that of the 328, feels like its performance is noticeable effected by factors such as weather conditions, how long its been since I've done a pull, engine temp., and etc.

You already have an intercooler and I'm not sure what that has to do with throttle response.

You also have an oil cooler.

Can you be more specific on which parts of the 335is you are wanting to replace or add?

From what I've read the factory intercooler that comes with the n54 isn't that great. A better intercooler like an ER on would do better than the factory part in keeping intake air temps cooler and by doing so improve throttle response.

The 850w radiator and the extra fan. Does the Z4IS come with the oil cooler?

The Z4 35i/iS and the 335iS share the same intercooler and the Z4 35i/iS both have factory oil coolers. I have no idea if the 335iS oil cooler is any better but based on parts diagrams they mount to the frame and connect to the hoses differently so it won't be a direct swap anyway. I have no idea if the radiator fan interchanges either but for what it's worth the image in the parts catalog is identical.

The 335is has the PPK2 that comes with the additional aux radiator on the driver front side. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=17_0561

The Z4 35is only comes with the standard PPK.

The 1M comes with the same PPK2 as the 335is.

Now is it possible to have retro fitted the additional aux rad, yes. Is it worth it ?

Well if you NOT doing the work yourself absolutely not.

BMW did not add the PPK2 to the E89 Z4 35is because it did not need it for the same power level as the 335is. The 1M and 335is need it due to the crammed in space under the engine hood which lacks passive ambient airflow, which causes over heating issues on the regular 1 and 3 series cars.

The E89 Z4 does not suffer from this and has plenty of room under the hood that is rare to find in an enthusiast car.

I feel like the car's performance suffers after every pull I do. Even at night when temperatures are moderate. I went cruising with a friend that drives an m3 and it started becoming very laggy and less powerful after a few spirited runs.

I was hoping that the additional cooling parts would help the motor perform more consistently.

If you want to do the project just because it sounds fun then cool.

But... if you have a performance problem you are trying to solve then with the information here you are just guessing. You shouldn't be thinking of anything other than taking logs of whats going on so you can address the root cause.

I just did a track day with three very hard 20min sessions and cooling wasn't an issue.

That sounds like heat soak. The stock fmic is a weak performer. I'd recommend going with an upgrade as one of your first mods and take it from there. I went with a Wagner 5 inch since it was plug in play, and I wasn't sure how long I was going to keep my car. Now I wish I went with a 7 inch and did a bit of trimming...

I m about to take the wagner evo 2 competition and I m planning to track my car. What version do you have? The evo 2 compet seems to be a good choice for feet and weight reason.

Interesting ?. I m going to track mine too. Can you tell me what temp you have at the end of the session? What rear pads do you use. Very hard to find rear pads for this car in Europe ?

Think evo 1. Just 5 inch intercooler, no additional components.

Ok. normally, the evo 2 competition is better so I thing to go with it since with the shipping and taxes fees, the vrsf will cost about 600$
