Optimal engine temperature?

I really havent noticed the car engine temperature needed too much till today. I was stuck in stop and go heavy traffic today and the needle when i noticed it was around 110 and reached 120. Is that normal for heavy stop and go traffic for 35is. Also did the golf tee mod earlier this week would it affect engine temperate at all. I hardly see a connection if there is one.

GolfT affects nothing other than sound. 110/120 is normal operating temp. around just under half. Don't worry until the needle goes all the way to the right!

There is no water temp gauge. The oil temp is displayed so that you know when you're warmed up enough to really spin those turbos!

Very normal. Mine usually hangs around 240-250F (115-120C). I was a little concerned at first, because the steady state oil temp is lower in my 335i. But it's normal for this car.

Sometimes the oil temp needle isn't all the way to the right but the car will go into power reduction anyway if the coolant temp goes too high.

I can't find the thread from the E90 boards (and not sure if it works for the E89) but there is apparently a way to get the display between the gauges to show the coolant temp

Thats normal? is this when in idle traffic? That's pretty high. If it is normal, i would opt for some kind of air flow to prevent underhood static pressure.

That's steady state in-town driving in stop and go traffic. The other guys seem to concur that this is the normal operating range.

Def normal range. I'm at 240 unless it's really hot outside and I'm in traffic, then it's gone as high as 260.

Hoping others can chime in and shed more light on vented hoods, and if they're worth the buy or if they're not functional and just for show.

If you're worried about high oil and coolant temp I think looking into the OE 850W radiator fan and auxiliary radiator from 1m / 335is is a better place to start rather than vented hood

hello morfix,

i've noticed the same thing comparing to my ex 335i...
I wonder if there is a problem with my Z4 35i, because the oil temperature is raising faster (no need to wait as long as the 335i) and higher (if i drive a little hard, the temperature can easily raise up above 120° celsius (beyond the half) than the 335i.

So you think it's normal?

I was worrying, thinking what will happen when summer come...

That's normal, as far as I know. I haven't had any issues, and I live in a pretty hot area

I too have seen 260F-270F (beyond half) from driving a little hard. From what I have seen when the summer comes and you drive really hard, you will see over 270F and the car will start to reduce engine power, and at 300F it will feel non turbo

Fact of life from having the N54 engine but not the cooling equipment in 1M/335is

The n54 engine has been designed to run on those temperatures (120c is optimal for the metals used internally) if you're using the correct oil the engine is happy. In traffic and/or during summer that can raise a little bit but still normal.

Since this is oil temp normal operating temp s around 230-250*F of course the 250F range might be a little spiritied driving. That is 110 to 121.1 for all the Celsius folks out there.

Disregarding the C/F #s (confusing me lol), how many 'ticks' have you maxxed out at and still being normal operation? I've driven spiritedly and it is at the 1/2way mark, but under normal driving, 1 tick below 1/2. How many ticks above 1/2 did you reach?

commuting is 1 tick below half

highest ever was 5 ticks above half (welcome to limp mode party )

last night return home from office is 1 or 2 ticks above half

After 2 ticks above half I notice power reduction and 5 ticks above half car feels non turbo. This is pretty much inline with what the pdfs posted somewhere on this site say to expect.

EDIT: "spirited" driving gets you 1/2.. are you sure it is spirited ? (j/k)
