Angry Surprise!!! No Warranty.

I have an interesting story. I bought a 2014 Z4 almost a year ago, April 2016. The car had 500 miles on it because it was some BMW executive's car. They sold it to me as a new car. When they sold it to me, they said since it was new it would come with free maintenance and the standard 4 yr/50k mile warranty. Today, I took it into the dealership to get the first maintenance. Oil change and break fluid. I asked them to confirm that it was all covered and explained it was sold to me as a new car. They looked it up and said the warranty expired because the in service date was January 2013. As you can imagine, I am not happy. I said I wanted to speak with the General Manager because they sold the car to me, less than a year ago, with the impression that I have free maintenance and plenty of warranty left. They never mentioned the in service date was January 2013 and that the warranty would expire in 9 months.

Which brings me to my question. I read on here that if you have an existing warranty, you can purchase a BMW extended warranty. However, since the dealership misled me, I did not know the warranty expired, last month. Can I still buy a BMW extended warranty or am I going to have to look at 3rd party warranties?

I'm so pissed off right now.

To answer your question, the car must be under original factory warranty in order to qualify for a BMW extended warranty.

Question: How could a MY 2014 car be put into service so early? I would think they were not even producing 2014s until mid-year 2013

the build date is not the in-service date. But certainly it cannot precede the build date.

You have to be careful when dealerships make these kinds of sales. I have purchased two cars that were sold as "new" when, in fact, they weren't really "new", in the traditional sense. That doesn't mean the car is considered "used".

In the first case the car I bought was a 2006 that I purchased in Feb. of 2007. It was on the lot for a VERY long time (6 spd. lux. model, kinda hard to sell that) and they activated the warranty to avoid taking an inventory loss on it and enable them to write it off as an expense to the dealership. It had maybe 50 miles on it. This was all explained to me and I left with the car and the understanding that the warranty was 3.5 years/50K miles. As part of the deal, though, I was smart enough to make them certify it as part of the deal, at no charge, so I would have 5.5yrs./100K of warranty.

The second car I negotiated and reached a deal over the phone as the car was in Houston. When I got there, the salesman informed me that he didn't know a manager had checked the car out as an executive car and it actually had 2.5K on it. I renegotiated on the spot to knock several thousand dollars off the previously agreed upon price. The car was never "activated" so I ended up losing only the mileage and not the time. This car was also sold to me as "new".

Bottom line. Whether you knew or not and whether they lied to you or not, if your paperwork indicates the deal is anything like my two situations above and you signed the paperwork, it's shitty, but it's on you. I would still contact BMWNA and complain after you thoroughly read through your purchase paperwork.

If you make a big enough stink at the dealership, I am sure they will cover your oil change. I can't imagine their actual cost would be any higher than $50. As for warranty, it would definitely go from the date the car was put in service, whether they sold it to you "new" or not.

Sounds like a horrible dealer. I would contact BMWNA.
