H&R Rear Sway Bar Link replacement

H&R Rear Sway Bar Link replacement

One of the problems with installing the H&R rear sway bar on an E89 is that the factory end links make it difficult if not impossible to adjust the bar to the stiffest position. Also at full wheel droop the bar almost touches the axle. To fix this problem I came up with the following solution. The key was finding an 8mm to 10mm threaded stud. I attached a 10mm tie rod end and an 8mm female rod end to the stud. I sealed the rod end with rubber seals, centered it with taper spacers and located on center with nylon washers. Check out results below. Very workable solution to the problem.

Parts List

Tie Rod End: NationSkander P/N SQ10RS-1 Bearing, 10mm Threads
Metric Step Stud: Bel-Metric P/N S8X10X38, 38mm Long, 10mm thread to 8mm Thread
Female Rod End: NationSkander P/N PHS8 8mm Hole and Threads
5/16” Bore Taper Washer Steinjäger P/N J0015460
5/16” Bore Rod End Seal: Had them in parts bin
5/16” Nylon Washers 1/16” Thk: Lowes
M10 Jam Nut
M8 Jam Nut
M10 Nylock

Yup. I did the same. But here's the other issue (aside the adjustment). I found the factory end link with the sway bar had binding issues and caused the rear end to be real squirrely. This cleaned right up with the new end-link set on the loosest setting.

I only wish there were more E89 owners who worked on their cars to improve the performance. I had many Corvettes before my Z4 and all the guys I knew worked on their cars to improve the performance. That doesn't seem to be the case with Z4 guys (and gals), trying to be PC.

There are a few working on their cars. But not many. Back to the end links for the rear, the damning part is the E89 rear is *almost* the same on the E46. But the stamped arm gives headaches if trying to use a stock "aftermarket" E46 end link, so you have to roll your own (as you and I both did). I suspect that's not common, which is *maybe* why people are having problems with the H&R setup on these cars and going to coil overs. I was in the zip code of ditching the M-adaptive/H&R setup on my car prior to changing the rear end links - it was that bad, but much much better after. Lots of little things are just ever-so-slightly different back there, like you can't run stock E46 limiters with the E89 trailing arms - you have to push out the rear subframe bushings (they are 4mm wider on the E89) and press in the E46 M3 ones to run the limiters. I suspect the E89 bushing is 4mm in a (poor?) attempt to do the same job the aftermarket limiters did on the E46.

Good luck with your work!

Filippo

Thank you for this! That rear end link was such a pain in the ass and like you mentioned I'm also getting a slightly unpredictable rear-end on track and I've been looking for an adjustable end link (with no success). Coming from an E46 it's definitely frustrating how few people are driving these cars in anger on track and/or autocross...

KW Variant 3's are very good. I ran them on my 09 Cosworth supercharged Miata. The goal with my Z4 is to build a streetable track capable car. From many years of race car experience I kept the stock springs and focused on shocks and sway bars. I found a good shock in Koni FSD's ( Frequency selective damping) which I'm currently running. They are soft for high velocity bumps like road potholes but are very stiff for slow speed movement like when cornering at the track. I'm running 18x8.5 front and 18x9.5 TSW Bathurst wheels with Firestone Indy 500 tires, 235/40 front, 265/35 rear. Note these are rebranded Bridgestone RE 003's sold in Australia and southeast asia. Very good tire. Worked great first time out at Sebring. Note how flat car corners considering stock springs.

Hey guys

I have the car at my garage now, he s putting the KW V3 and the HR sway bar. It's not easy to fit the rear like you. I thought that with the kw v3, it will be no problem. I was wrong?

They are a tight fit. You can run the mid setting and it might work fine with the KW3 (others with the setup must talk to it. I have KW3's sitting on my shelf, but haven't installed). With the M-sport/H&R spring setup (as noted earlier in this thread), we found the swaybar too close to the half shaft. We ended up making rod end links (just from pieces) and set the bar to the loosest setting. Transformed a twitchy rear end to a pliable one. That's with m-sport not KW3.

By using a tie rod end vs another metal rod end, are you not adding another wear item, as well as introducing some available joint "flex"?

Probably the easiest solution without fabrication though...

Thanks guys, my shop were able to put it finally in the medium setup. I just hope that with the KW V3, it will not touch anything on track...
