The leak is very minor, a weep, without any dripping onto the undercovers. Workshop says not to worry and check transmission oil levels once a year should be fine.

Don't know if I'm comfortable with leaving it like this or get it fixed again. What do you guys think?

Is it under warranty? Better get it checked out again. Apparently, there was a TSB out to show the techs how to properly seal the tranny box...my shop had to do it twice to (knock wood) get it right. It was also just 'sweating' as well but best to get it fixed sooner vs later.

Good advice. Will have an official BMW workshop do it this time vs an Indi.

Warranty has long lapsed. This repair will be on my own dime.

Cheers.

Do you have the TSB number or a link to that document?

Or a general idea of how to seal the dct covers correctly?

The closest info I could find was instructions to resealing the oil pan with Drei Bond 1209 sealing agent.

Any pointers from you guys will be appreciated as my car is getting a new seal end of this week. Cheers.

I don't, unfortunately. Hopefully you can press your dealer's tech to make sure they do it right this time. At least it's covered by their work warranty, so that's peace of mind. Imo, definitely need to do this at BMW for that assurance in case they screw up.

Excellent advice Tranquility. The Bmw work warranty will certainly be good to have since the leak tends to reoccur shortly after fixing it.

OK will report back next month and see how things go after the fix. Cheers.

Was at my shop getting the M3 control arms put in and guess what I see. Yes, the transmission is leaking on my 11 35is. Will take it to the dealer to have a look, car is still under warranty.

The Service shope agrees to a leak from the gasket. They are now working with BMW to figure out if they need to re-torque the case or change the gasket. Personally I would like the gasket to be changed as I don't think the re-torque will help. It will loosen up again and leak. What do you folks think...

Let them re-torque it and see what happens. It's a conservative approach and you can step it up and have the seal replaced if it doesn't work.

Just be careful they don't over torque as that can squeeze the rubber seal out of the frame. That was why my mechatronic cover was leaking.

After 3 attempts by the first workshop to fix the leak to no avail, a second workshop fixed it on the first attempt by not over tightening the screws.

Good luck and keep us posted.

That's just a temp fix and will need to be replaced to be done right. If you're under warr, just try to insist upon it instead of wasting time as I think many here went through the same thing.

Thanks guys. I am still waiting to hear back on what BMW NA decides to do with it. I am of the opinion the re-torque is like a band-aid. I am hoping they replace the seal and all.

Mine already replaced the gasket and oil pan cover twice, which was done by the dealer due to my car still under warranty. Everytime when I have my car to do an oil change, I always asked my mechanic to open the bottom plastic cover and check if there's any transmission oil leak. If I found any oil stain at the cover bottom, I would send it back and ask them to keep changing the gasket. And this issue it's quite common on any BMW which equipped with the DCT, doesnt matter z4, 1 series or M3

So the service center fixed it, citing a leak from the O-ring seal on top pf the transmission, not from the transmission pan at the bottom. One weird behavior I have noticed in SPORTS or Sports + mode is that the gears hold longer, almost to the red line before upshisfting after the fix. Is this normal?

I just found out I have this issue on my 09 s35i. The dealer quoted me ~$2,300 to replace the pan gasket and the mechatronic seal. Seems very high. Can any others share what they paid for this repair?

Interesting. I have an '09 sdrive 35i as well. Just bought it 2 weeks ago with 66k miles. I was going to do pre-purchase inspection but he showed me a receipt from BMW only 800 miles ago when they replaced 6 fuel injectors. Receipt showed no issues after multi-point inspection. prev owner paid $3500 for new 2 rear wheels and 6 injectors. Not under warranty of course.

Found out about the leak when I decided to do post purchase inspection. I'm in AZ and bought the car in San Diego. Also have to replace both front and rear breaks and battery. grrrr

Bumping this as my tranny has leaked yet again so I'm due for my 3rd repair (luckily under warranty). Apparently, there's no real, permanent fix to this crazy prb, the best the mechanics can do is refill/seal and wait for it to happen again. Can this srsly be real??

Anyone get it fixed and that's it (or never had a leak in the first place) or am I looking for a unicorn?

Is this all Z4's with the DCT or only certain years that have this known problem?

I believe it's restricted to DCTs but no idea re years (I would hazard a guess the year's not relevant).

I just bought a 35is and now I want to look for this as well.
How is it visible? Where do I look?
Do I look for stains on the floor of the garage?

Thanks!
