what is that metal clicking and popping sound whenever i change gears?

P to R, click.
P to D, pop.
R to D or D to R, huge jolt and clunk.
brake to full stop, click.

Are you running a DCT or the ZF auto? I'm running a DCT and I get those sounds as well, I think its normal. Also, the car goes into neutral on a full stop.

DCT; and i highly doubt a luxury car making click, pop, clunk sounds and a jolt is what makes it luxurious and normal. i read somewhere it's a problem with the gearbox and/or brakes but this search engine is pretty trash.

This is totally normal for this gearbox. I've owned 3 DCT E89s (35i and 35is) and they all make these sounds when changing gears from P to D or R. This particular question has been answered plenty of times as well.

i'll see what i can do. i only have my phone to record and will likely capture ambient noises more than anything.

Had a 2011 Z4 35i and now a 2016 Z4 35is. Both with DCT. There is a "clunk" when moving in/out of "P". I believe this is the transmission lock like regular auto tranny. Noise is louder when taking in/out of parking on an incline. I noticed it is similar when changing from drive to reverse. It's not as loud as I interpret your initial description. A recording of the sound would be better to help assess.

I had a 2008 VW GTI with DSC (their dual clutch). I did experience loud noise as you described. They had a recall on the DSC on a bushing that wears out prematurely. Once they replaced the bushing, I no longer had the loud noise.

this is annoying like all my problems with the z4. you encounter a problem, you try to film it and the problem disappears......
