Umm the late fad with Japanese Hondas/cars, yes. The black/ CF hardtop trend started with the release of the black/CF Mugen hardtop which I owned along with the black OEM over 10 years ago.

Should I even mention my 1991 Acura NSX with black top? Thats over 20 years ago. I am not here to argue or debate this. I am just simply stating this is old news.

Back to the topic at hand. I think the black top looks great. Silver, not so much.

Good improvements!

What I however still don't get is that antenna. This is so ugly and so beginning '80's !! The Z1 already had its antenna in the windscreen, much better!

Works with older vehicles from 50's/60's, not so much modern.

Who's arguing? I just pointed out a basic automotive historical fact. Nothing to defend or be upset about. Besides, the del Sol was available with a contrasting Black Targa top in 1993 as a factory option. I'd say that would have started the whole 'Black Roof / Japanese car thing, as that was seven years before the S2K was released. As for the NSX, I always thought that was plain ol' goofy. The base model / coupe has a black top while the higher end Targa model gets a color matched roof.

  1. Running out of ideas, BMW? You did this two years ago already.
  2. It doesn't cost BMW a dime to add this option, but the buyer will probably have to pay through the nose to get it.
  3. Why would I want my car to look like I put it together from pieces I found from the scrap yard?

At least it's an option for ppl who like to customize. Maybe it'll look better on a white car, definitely not Orion Silver.

I so agree with this ^^^ .... just wondering here did all you fellows miss the OEM Style 296 wheels on that car in the original post hmmmm wonder if Jason can tell us if that is the latest and greatest modified/redesigned 296 wheel I've been reading about.

How about it Jason ... any comments along that front?

CF would have been sweet but glass would just add more weight. I can see how BMW would do glass over CF though. It looks like they're trying to widen their market base by appealing to new types of customers rather than just sticking with the old performance oriented crowd. The new Z4 itself is a good example as a car that's closer to SLK (looks w/o the performance) than Boxster (performance). Another example is all the M Performance packages that are mostly just looks and no performance.

One of the advantages of the hardtop versus a softtop is that is is the same color as the rest of the car! I don't see the point of screwing up the design, especially since this is one of the few convertibles that looks good with the top either up or down.

I see no point.

While I can appreciate the ability to be individualized, good luck with the resale value of one of these.

This option is very common in Herndon, here in Virginia
I see a lot of Latinos with body panels, in contrasting colours
Nothing like a red car with a blue door to make a statement

As some here have posted, this is a classic look from the 50's, 60's, and 70's that really looked good with the right color combination. This scheme was used on the Lotus Elite coupe in the early 60's, on Lotus Elan hard tops used on convertible models, and on the Lotus Elan Plus 2 coupe. See below:

Here's a Porsche 356a Carrera with a black hardtop:

I like the look on the Z4, as it's a classic front engine/rear drive/two seat layout. This would not look quite so good on a 3-series or on other cars in BMW's lineup. I imagine that a few older buyers who remember this look might check this block on the options list. After all, they're the demographic most likely to be able to afford this car and go for the relatively heavy folding hardtop version currently being made. If this helps BMW move a few more of them out the door, what's the harm? If you're one of those younger buyers who doesn't like it, then don't buy it.

I think it looks sick. I have an Atacama Z4 35is that I have thought about wrapping the HT in black vinyl. Also I think that miata special edition that has the black roof looks amazing for a miata. Granted I did have an S2000 a couple years back and loved the look of the CR cars with the black HT's
