2008 Paris Auto Show Preview: BMW To Debut Four New Cars
Date posted: 08-26-2008

MUNICH, Germany — The biannual Paris auto show is not normally the selected site for world debuts as is the case in Detroit, Frankfurt and Tokyo — but, where BMW is concerned, the 2008 Paris Auto Show will be different. Besides the world public debuts of the mid-life 3 Series and all-new 7 Series sedans, Munich is bringing an ActiveHybrid version of the 7 Series to Paris.

In addition to these debuts, BMW has confirmed it will unveil the new X1 small SAV concept based on the architecture used for the 1 and 3 Series. Further details are not currently available on the X1, but look for mechanicals identical to what is seen in the X3 and the 1 and 3 Series cars. The X1 is hinted to make it to U.S. showrooms, although this is still unofficial.

BMW has also confirmed that the all-new Z4 coupe and convertible will be shown at the Los Angeles auto show in late November. The new model will go on sale in January, after the Detroit auto show. At the same time, the new seven-speed dual-clutch (DCT) transmission will be available for North American sale on both the 335i and 335d.

What this means to you: Paris and L.A. get BMW's newest. — Matt Davis, Correspondent

bmwblog.com has also confirmed it will debut at the LA show as the original poster suggests:

It has been confirmed, BMW will unveil the new all re-designed Z4 at the L.A Auto Show in November. The 2009 BMW Z4 is expected to go on sale sometimes after the Detroit Show in January ‘09. Based on previous experience, most likely BMW will showcase the Z4 in L.A, but keep the pricing confidential until January.

Even though no technical details have been released so far, a few days ago based on some spy photos, we learned that the new BMW Z4 will get the 3.0 liter twin-turbo engine along with a 7 DKG transmission.

This is good example how one source write something and all others just copy it. We will see official photos in late November, but debut will be at Geneva motor show. After Geneva motorshow new Z4 will be available in EU and in May in USA.

I too would be extremely surprised if this thing were available for anywhere near a January delivery date. Given how tight-lipped they've been to this point, March does seem a bit more realistic.

However, I would love to be proven wrong. I'm finally buying into all the hype on this car and thinking it might just be the ticket to freshen up my 2005 Z4 into a 2009 Z*.

What engines will be available at launch, specifically for the UK? Any ideas?

Great! Anything a bit smaller? By 2009, petrol prices in the UK will probably be about £100 per litre. Are there rumours of a 4 cylinder twin turbo petrol?

At beginning I know N54 stage2 will be available. Probably smaller 2.5 R6 engine too, but thats not for sure yet...

Diesel engine will be available in Z4 too, but I don't know when, probably not at beginning. 2000 ccm twin turbo with a little over 200 hp.

How do you know this "for sure". I mean, I've heard oodles of speculation but no solid info. Yes, it would make sense...

You're wrong, Detroit auto show is in January, press release is in November , less than one month away.

They planned to launch Z4 in Detroid, but timetable was changed and will be in LA.
