Trunk/Boot Opening
Hello Experts,
I'm new to the E89 (2011). I've had it comprehensively examined both by Principle BMW of San Antonio and a local indie. Both report no codes and no issues with the car. So maybe this is an operational error on my part - or I sure hope so. The trunk/boot will not open with an emblem push. It will open every time without exception using the cabin release. I'd appreciate any suggestions for getting the emblem release working. TIA Edit: I edited the copy above to reflect that it WAS my error with the fob. I wasn't holding the button down long enough. Now my only issue is with the fob. Last edited by dryadsdad; 09-23-2023 at 11:44 AM.. |

I'm iOS. Of those you cited, do you have a recommendation for Apple phones?

OK, I ordered a reader from Amazon partly due to a Prime Deal day so I got it at what I hope is a decent price for a scanner. It specifically lists the E89 as a car it can do a complete scan on including the ECU or ECM whatever it's called in BMW-speak.
Looks like I'm set up now to get into all sorts of mischief. |

I will although since I'm a novice with both BMWs and OBD scanners, I'm unsure the value of what I report is. Meanwhile, the scanner I have coming is:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BG6SRKWK As of now, I have to wonder if BMW could have found a less accessible place for the OBD port. I doubt it. |

I based my choice on the manufacturer's claims as well as a review from a BMW tech who said in that review that the scanner's reports/abilities equaled the BMW official scanner. It should arrive today but it'll be at least the weekend before I can give it a try. |

Follow up on the scanner I purchased and identified above.
The scanner itself seemed to me, a novice, like a serious piece of equipment. The instructions didn’t help me at all. Instead they were what I have come to think of as typical Chinese Equipment Instructions meaning they go into detail about obscure or obvious things but ignore conveying any useful information. I booted it up spending an hour or so updating all the modules. AFAIK, it is only useful for BMW, Rolls and Mini. That’s a bit of a letdown since we own two other brands of cars but OK, I only got it for the Z4. Mucking through the menus I noted a way to scan all the modules so did so. It returned a ‘no codes’ result. I hit ‘clear all codes’ anyway which only took a few seconds. The result was no result. The trunk/boot logo push still didn’t open the trunk/boot. Throughout the operation, I hadn’t a clue what I was doing. For example, the instructions went on and on about ‘binding the VCI’ so I looked up VCI and still had no idea if I should bind or unbind it. I left it alone. After the scan, I realized I have a device here that likely can brick my perfectly running car and so I have absolutely no business wielding it for fear of doing just that. My final decision came when I asked myself how would I use this whizzbang to install a new battery? I had no clue. So despite me believing it worked fine, I returned it to Amazon. Last night I got an inspiration so bought a Haynes manual on all things OBD II. I’ll read that and maybe decide to again buy a scanner but this time with some foreknowledge. |

Yeah, I push the top of the emblem to unlatch then use my fingers at the bottom of the trunk to open it. I don't lift up on the emblem itself because I don't want to cause excess stress on it.

Hmm. I used the term 'open' when I should have said 'unlatch'.
Push on the emblem and the trunk/boot doesn't make the electric motor/unlatch noise with my E89. That's what I'm trying to address. It works perfectly using the cabin switch or the key switch. |

Just a thought, but you could remove the old unit and test the switch with a multimeter just to confirm it’s bad.

Testing it will be easy. Figuring out how to remove it or get at it will (for me) be the challenge. Due to my workload and the lack of urgency in this repair, I'll plan on doing just that but I'm unsure when I can get at it.
