shaking under acceleration

I drive 2012 35is z4. i just experienced wierd car reacting in the mornign on the way to work...
shaking started 4th(and 5, 6, 7 also ) gear under acceleration with check light.
heavier acceleration brings heavier shaking.. this felt so terrible
it seemed like transmission slip....
I parked then turned off and my colleague used diagnosis cable to check the code but when i turned of engine , the check light was gone and the diagnosis could not find.. as i know ecu saves the code and the diagnosis should find it..
am i wrong?

is this some critical issue on the car? or just temporary transmission slip?
any of you had this kinda issue?

sounded like limp mode to me. If so there is a code stored. Have your indy read the codes and it will reveal the issue.

Sounds like limp mode like you said. Experienced that on 2013 650i Coupe. They replaced injector and spark plug (it was fouled from flooded cylinder).

then is transmission ok?

i felt transmission gone bad because of car shaking....
limp mode usually activate to protect engine or/and transmission from further damage when engine is extremely hot
my commute distance is only 4-5 miles..

ok if this is limp mode how it could be activate and how can i fix?
this is just a temporary ecu misjudgment ?

Limp mode is designed to basically protect the drive train.
On my 2011 Z4 it was a module on the DCT. Warranty took care of it quickly from the code readouts.
When my son's 2009 328 acted exactly like my Z4 did when in limp mode, I proudly announced to him it was the transmission.
Wrong, it was the plugs and coils. Stealer put in new and now running fine.
As above, have the codes read by a competent indy or dealer. Should tell you what problem is. Always a possibility just a one time throw but probably not.

Seems like the spark plug issue. same thing happened to me. This is a common issue with plugs on the 35is. if you have warranty, they replace it. My dealer was nice enough to replace all six of them.

Hi guys.
first of all, thank you for all respond.
I was at 80 miles and took of my foot to naturally reduce speed to 70.
then i did strongly accelerated. it was 7th gear and i experienced second time
car shaking with acceleration....
is this mostly like spark plug or/and injector issue?
warranty was expired long time ago, so i am really worried about the cost.
if i go bmw dealer, how much is avg for diagnosis?
(odometer is about 35K)

my z4 had a very similar issue recently. obd-ii code indicated misfire (bank 1, cylinder 1). it was a bad injector coil.

This is an incorrect mixup of items.

Was it the injector?
Was it the coil?

The coil connects to a sparkplug and has no relationship to an injector functionality.

With all that cleared up, I am sure you meant to explain a bad coil caused your misfire

replaced all spark plugs and bought OBD II reader

hi guys,
let me tell you summary of progressing

I got 3rd time shaking at heavy acceleration in sport plus mode
this time check light remained after engine off. so used friend's reader(not for BMW one .. normal one). code was P0301 (cylinder 1 misfiring)
I replaced all spark plugs last weekend and the code reader could not clear code and it seems like the issue has not been solved. so I bought a code reader at ebay that can also clear BMW codes and reset service. I think ignition coils
(Icarsoft i910 II) were all mixed during spark plug replacement.
now questions..
If a coil was bad, would I need to clear code then try to repeat code to figure out which cylinder got the bad coil?
If coils were all fine, what part would i suspect? injector?

Yes. Clear the codes then try to induce the problem and see which cyl has the misfire.

Just like another post - at about 30k these cars start needing ignition "maintenance" - if no coils are bad, give her a new set of plugs. It's the cheapest place to start.

I just replaced my valve cover gasket and as part of that process i had to remove the coils, spark plugs (well i didnt have to but i did) and move all the wiring out of the way. What i noticed was that the wiring for the coils was all at the exact length to reach each coil and not longer. So in my case cylinder number 1 had the longest wires to connect to the coil and it reduced in length until it got to cyl 6. So if you visually look and you do not have a spaghetti of wires i suspect you have it correct. Plus the wires were held in place by a few clamps so that even if you did remove them all at once they likely held their perspective positions.

NOW let me say this if you did somehow mess up the order you will likely have to trace the wires back to the previous module (ECU i think) and see what order they are in the using a Manufacturers diagram figure out which wires are which. This part is best handled by an INDY or the dealer.

SO with me thinking you probably have the order already correct I would definitely scan the ECU for codes and if one is present i such as misfire or something like that i would replace the coil that is affected.

OHHHH jsut thought about this.

All the coils are interchangeable. SO if you get a misfire on cylinder #2. take the coil from cylinder 2 and swap it with Cylinder 1. reset the code and then see if the code appears on cylinder 1. IF IT DOES then it is definitely the coil pack.

As evidence to this: I've been driving my 2011 Z4 3.0 for three months - now has 28k miles, and recently it started stuttering/misfiring/hesitating above 2500 RPM when accelerating more heavily (behaves fine below that). It did this in sport or normal mode. After checking the coils (loosened and pulled them one at a time while running, listening for rough running) and finding no bad coils, I replaced the plugs, problem solved. Smooth as a kitten, responsive as a cheetah now.
