That said I'm a die hard BMW fan and continue to buy their products based on that alone. But even for guys like me, its not difficult to see the competitions has caught up and has an fantastic formula. One could say they may even be beating BMW at their own game.

Excited for the reveal but hoping they drew inspiration from its predecessor.
The last E31 8-series was a special car (V12+6MT!) and a thing of beauty... ...and led to an interesting experiment by M-engineers that almost spawned the fabled "M8". Still, I also love the 6-series line, name, and history. Hoping BMW finds a suitable spot in its lineup for the 6er's next incarnation.

mercedes is not crap. yes, the c63s coupe weighs 1857kg, the m4 weighs 1572kg to be exact. the c63s sedan weighs 1749 kg. but youre comparing a 444 hp/406 ft-lb torque 6-cylinder with a 503 hp/516 ft-lb torque 8-cylinder engined car....that extra weight would give you better traction on a car putting out more than 100+ ft-lb more of torque. so the weight point needs to be taken in the overall context of the car. it's not like you're comparing two 6-cylinder cars putting out about the same amount of torque/hp. if you were then you could compare the weight of the two and say mercedes is crap. the mct is not "shit" as you claim. the shifting on it is pretty quick/very little noticeable lag if any at all. i'd buy the c63s any day over the m4, even for the sole reason that it doesnt sound as richard hammond so elequently put it, "like a fart in bathwater" like the m4's sound these days. sayara 9otha k2anha tt6ag3. exhaust zbala. if you were comparing the e92/e93 m3's, those things were beauties. but bmw went from making a badass german track & muscle car, to a car that is "more fuel efficient" but sounds like garbage. give me the v8 from the e9x series m3's any day. 3ndi so2al lk, ent mt9w3? I understand the 6 underpins the 5 and now the 6 coupe is no longer in production. What we were saying is that there is still room for an E class coupe competitor and the cheap way of going at it would be to just give us a 2 door 5 as we have seen with the 3 & 4.

Cheers for that. Going through that exercise reminded me how confusing Merc's current model naming is.
If you take their SUVs, it sort of makes sense where the SUV E class is the GLE, the SUV S the GLS, then the GLC and GLA and whatever else. The coupaloon of the A is appropriately enough called the CLA. The coupaloon E? That'd be the CLS. The previous E coupe? That was the CLK. The roadster C? Oh, that was the SLK. The E SUV? That used to be the ML. In all of this confusion, I somehow got to the incorrect conclusion that the new S Coupe must be the CLS (especially seeing as it used to be the CL previously), which of course is actually the coupaloon version of the E... People can say what they want about BMW's naming convention these days with the sDrive and xDrive and whatnot, but it somehow just makes more sense with the number preceding it (i.e. 1 to 7 and soon 8). Anyway, my rant's at an end. Thanks again for correcting it |

False. The R233 SL mule is being tested with an AMG GT platform and an S coupe shell right now and will be out by the end of the decade. It's being designed from the ground up by AMG and will probably have a coupe version with small backseats as well.
IMHO they're probably replacing the SL and GT with this R233 in order to compete directly with the 911 all the way from SL400 vs base 911 to SL63s vs 911 turbo S, with a V12 model for vanity. Edit: I despise soft tops but I guess I'll make an exception and replace my SL63 with the M8 vert if they decide to make one. This 8 series is going to eat the S-class's lunch. I still have faith in BMW Last edited by scoobysaurus; 05-11-2017 at 03:51 PM.. |

Yes there is potentially as much room between 4er and 8er as there is between 3er and 7er. However the 2 door coupé market overall is shrinking globally and seems to polarize towards either large luxury / GT coupés (Bentley, Aston Martin...) or smaller, sportier and significantly more affordable coupés from the C and D segments (2er, 4er, C Coupé, A5...). In the middle, that intermediary E segment seems to generate the least demand for coupés and pretty much only has the E Class Coupé remaining. Mercedes can afford staying on this difficult segment because they have the legitimacy of their long and glorious coupé history, Audi never seemed to bother to launch à 2 door A7, and BMW seemingly has plans to drop the 6er = 5er coupé idea and focus on something different instead. Which would be a shame if confirmed, but again there just doesn't seem to exist enough demand at this point.
