Model Year designations

I've always been confused about this topic. Why is it usually the MY # is most likely 1 one than the actual year, e.g. MY2011 released in 2010? It gets a bit confusing. To add to the confusion, I understand that for the Z4 the MYs have been even more convoluted, with shortened MYs? Can someone pls explain?

There is no regulation/law that I'm aware of that says a car produced on such and such a date must be marketed as such and such a model year. Traditionally, most car makers used to introduce their next year's model in Sept (a car made in Sept '09 would be a 2010 model year). When sales are slow, or when mfrs want to stimulate sales, they often start the next model year (the latest and greatest) earlier. This deplorable practice has been called "model year creep". What is against the law is someone selling a "leftover" 2010 model, for example, as the new, new 2011 model. Stuff like this used to happen a lot back in the 50's and 60's with VW Beetles when no one (particularly consumers) could tell the difference between a '65 and a '66 model (maybe in fact there was no difference). This was because the creeps (dealers) didn't want to discount the moldy oldy siting on their lot. But the FTC said that if you live by the model year, you die by the model year, so you can't re-designate model year. Having to discount the moldy oldy is a "legitimate market force". That's how I got my brand new '09 z4 in the Spring of 2010 with a $12,000 discount. Thank you FTC.

The Manufacturer will release the next model year based on whenever it is most profitable for them. This may come as a complete and utter shock to all , but whatever is best for their existing or potential customers never enters the equation.

2011 Z4 was to introduce the "is" model. Can't have one model of Z be a 2011 and the others be a 2010. Typically most manufacturer's bring out the new model year in late October or early November. Exceptions seem to be for new releases and trying to beat the competition to the punch. Bottom line it is $$ driven.

My company is a tiered supply to several auto manufacturer's and we are currently providing parts for vehicles that will be released in 2015. We know where and how our parts are used but no idea what vehicles they will be on.

Warden,
You likely won't be able to order a 2012 until Sept/Oct of 2011.

In addition to what Silver-Bolt said, it seems that BMW previewed the current Z4 in March (or thereabouts), so you may get a preview of the 2012 in about 6 months or so (though it'll be a year until you can order it)

Makes sense and is about what I figured. MY2011 will be exceptionally long.
