New software update

Guys
The dealer must have updated my software when they replaced my steering rack.
I now get a "trac off" message alongside the sports + option on the dash display.
Didn't give it much thought until I went a bit hard on the throttle on a wet roundabout.
Where previously the back end would have hung out a bit, this time I went into a full blown tank slapper.
Scared the bejesus out of my wife.
I wish they would update the driver when they update the computer.
Can't help but think it would be safer to tell me I no longer have any traction or stability control in sports + mode.

Thank you BMW.

Can you please take a picture of the display? This would be an awsome update because up to now when I go to sport+ I can see on the nav-screen that the DTC is activated.

Sport = Traction off.
That is the difference between Sport and Sport .
Nothing new.

Ah yes. The light on the dash used to cone on. But the DSC used to catch the car if you started to slide the back out.
Now it seems we ate on our own. Fine if you know about it. A surprise the first time you find out.

Oh. And who said anything about a freeway/highway? A roundabout is all I said.

I can confirm that sport switches DTC off, and sport+ turns off DSC as well. Using sport+ on a freeway usually results in my rear slipping on fast long bends.

I disagree, at least for US models. Sport is a slightly relaxed DSC but traction control is still on. Sport+ turns traction control off (DTC mode) but leaves DSC on. Trac Off is DTC mode without Sport settings. Pressing and holding the Trac Off button is the only way I know to fully disable DSC.

OP: it is possible that the SW update relaxed the DSC/DTC reigns a bit but I doubt it changed the actual modes of operation.

I'm still working out the alleged handling issues with my 35is. I transited to the 35is from a highly tuned 2006 Z43.0si. There is no question that what I have and what I had are totally different vehicles. The 35is is powerful and comfortable but I have yet to sense anything close to the feel for the road I had in my older car. Granted, when it comes to daily driving the 35is is amazing. But I am concerned that no matter how much I get used to it, the vehicle may live down to many of its detractor's points about understeering and that uneasy feeling that youre on a vehicle with a long wheelbase that isn't properly balanced.

Well as far as I know in Sport+ mode there is still some sort of traction control activated, but looser than Sport mode or Normal.

In Sport+ mode the traction off lamp comes on.

To remove ALL traction and engage the e-differential you need to press the traction off button above the mode selector. EDIT: you have to hold the TRACTION button down for a few secs for this to happen else it just engages DTC for max traction on loose surfaces.

Stig: Did you ask your dealer if they performed a software update?

Still running the RFT's? Ditch them and you'll ditch the understeer and unbalanced feeling. Mine will go ASAP when I wear them out. In the meantime

Dr. Stig: Sport+ will have the DCS deactivated. It is in the manual. What BMW updated is a visual alert to remind you that sport+ has the DSC turned off.
My car MY Jan 2011 came with this warning sign; whenever I turned the Sport +

IMO, Sport + is not to drive the car on a highway, rather when you want to drift or see what are the limits of your Z4 without these electronics.

Glad you and your Z4 are ok :-)

Mine is a late 2010 build and I am sure I see a yellow warning light on the dash when I engage Sport+....

I like that with Sport+, there is about 50% of traction there.. if i want zero traction I'll old the OFF button...
This sucks...

I usually use sport+ on the freeway without issue
Hell I hit 150 today... (no traffic so don't flame, thanks)
Then again Traction rarely kicks on for me.. and I've never had it happen on the freeway (as long as you're smooth it shouldn't come on)

lol my mistake, but surely that makes it worse? Sport plus on a highway, fragile... Sport plus on a roundabout... plain scary! (unless its your own private roundabout, in which case, can I loan some money lol ).

Lol guys.

Alex, I have only arrived back in Brisbane tonight. I need to get the car back in to fix some roof squeaks. I'll ask them then.

I agree with the theory that the software update is more likely to be a relaxing of the DSC rather than a full blown disconnect in sports plus mode.

It's my favorite roundabout. Normally I slide round like Clarkson owned the car, this time she went full blown tank slapper.
That's all.

Mind you, I doubt the dealer knows half the stuff that gets folded into the software updates.
I can't seem to comfort access my boot anymore, and my prochip doesn't fold my Morris anymore either.
Time to re-flash me thinks.
